anybody own a power tiller? either handheld or tractor style
how do you like it? is it easy to use? do you feel it's worth what you paid for it?

suggestions?

tips?

thanks guys. I think I'm gonna need SOMETHING to help get the land ready on the new acre unless i do a section at a time and if I do that, hopefully I'll be done sometime in the next mmmmm 5 or 6 decades!!!!

1. Landscaping service discing
I have no idea how much a landscaping service would charge for discing an acre, but it'd be over in less than a day, and deeper than you'd get from a rototiller.

It took me all day with a fairly big rototiller to get the grass off of a ~20x20' patch of my yard. My guess is that your soil is quite a bit sandier than mine, and should go faster.

2. sandy clay is what I've got
which according to most garden books is a contradiction

I'll have to see when I finally get over there (can you tell I'm chomping at the bit?) but DH and I discussed that probably the easiest thing is to rent a tractor once a year until we get all the different spots done

he's holding out for a John Deere riding mower/tiller though......

3. We rented a big tiller to prepare
the back yard for grass seed (less than 1/16 acre). It wasn't difficult, it didn't take all day, but it requires strength to push that thing around. For your acre, I would suggest a tractor. Can you rent one? OR hire someone that has big equipment.
