Wild onion
Why is wild onion so prevalent in upstate SC (red clay), but doesn’t grow in Midland or Lowcountry SC(both sandy soils)?

1. I don't know SC that well...
...but we have what my neighbor calls a "Star of David" here that resembles a wild onion (southeast Michigan, south of Detroit - very clay-ey soil). I wonder if it's the same thing? I mean, do you ever eat it to find out if it's really wild onion? The plant I am thinking of is actually tantamount to a weed here! It's everywhere, and looks like onion with the subterranean bulb and green grassy leaves.

Just wondering!

2. Maybe it really likes red clay, where I live in Oklahoma...
it is dense red clay and I have more wild onions than I can count.

3. It's red in the east, and black in the west
That is what I remember about soil types in Oklahoma from the first chapter of "The Grapes of Wrath".
