I looked everywhere and I could not find any New Mexico Big Jim

pepper plants. I like to use those along with hot banana peppers for salsa.
I did find some garden salsa peppers, hot banana, serrano, and gypsy peppers. Habaneros are too hot for me :grr: :grr:

1. Have you ever tried Pepperoncini?

They are the kind Poppa John's puts in their Pizza boxes. I've never found them as a plant but I order the seeds on the internet. Very tasty.

I like a nice Jalapeno and Cayenne Mix thrown on the grill for a few minutes. Add about 5 tomatoes, an onion, some cilantro, lime juice and salt and pepper. Very zesty salsa.

3. I found 3 New Mexico Big Jim plants

at Home Depot in Georgetown. It was the last 3 they had. They are kind of small but I bought them. I planted them today along with all my other stuff.

4. After this thread I went looking in my area (CA) and noticed the paucity of Big Jim plants.

Most nurseries had the tag up but no plants. I wonder if something (magazine or TV story, for example) precipitated an uptick in demand this year or whether the producers had yield problems.

They are a mighty fine pepper. We have 4 plants in our garden this year.

5. I talked to several nurseries about this.

3 of them told me that they were having trouble getting what they ordered from the wholesale nursery delivery people. They didn't get a lot of the tomato plants they wanted either.

6. Are the NM Big Jim

peppers what is commonly referred to as New Mexico chilis? My husband has been trying to
find them here in Southern CA...he has found dry, red ones, but not the green fresh ones.
They are rather mild. Thanks for any information.

7. These are green but they do have some heat to them.

I believe they are the New Mexico green chilies.

8. Found NM Big Jim

pepper plants today at the local Home Depot...South Bay LA area.

Just getting ready to transplant them this afternoon.

Gosh, it feels good to get my hands dirty.

10. They are truly wonderful New Mex type chiles.

If you like to make rellenos, this chile is a good one to use because they're big and sturdier than standard Anaheims.

I got my hands dirty today too -- transplanting my heirloom and sauce tomato plants and the cukes and squashes. The chile peppers and Early Girl tomatoes have been in the ground for a while.
