Does anyone recognize this plant?
Edited on Wed May-23-07 01:36 PM by Skidmore
I found a single one of these when I was pulling weeds last year and took a picture of it. I collected seeds from it's pod and grew one in a pot, but they get weedy fast. I thought it resembles something from the wild artichoke family. Haven't seen it again, but I have some seeds that I'll plant so long as I know it's not a problem plant. I live in Iowa--for zone questions.

1. Evening Lychnis
I see it a lot in areas like construction zones and dry roadsides, so I'm guessing it's one of those plants that colonizes waste areas.

2. Thanks. It's a beatiful plant.
I might plant some down on the far end of the yard where not much grows but weeds from the back field.

3. It will probably be happy there
I've admired it, too.

4. Please don't take this wrong because I don't mean it to be
rude or disruptive but I don't think that that is what this plant is. The leaves are wrong and the flower structure is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. Evening Lychnis has flowers that sit on the top of a swollen calyx where this plant has a much more open habit, VERY similar to the flowers of Okra or a cotton plant. The petals on an Evening Lychnis are also somewhat perforated in a symmetrical fashion. This has leaves that look like those of a Pelargonium plant, finely cut and are spaced on opposing sides of the stem. Evening Campion or Evening lychnis has blade-like leaves and tends to send up a stalk with flowers on the end of the stem from a base that has a "rosette" of blade like leaves. I'm not sure what this plant is--I first thought it looked alot like prickly poppy but the flower is wrong and the lack of prickles on the stem.

I know that sometimes, there are local names for flowers, so I wonder if this could be the case. Again, I submit this humbly and in the best way.:hi:

5. I was at a workshop last week
by the Nature Conservancy and that looks a LOT like a plant that they said was a food plant for a certain kind of blue butterfly. Of course, I have forgotten the name of the plant AND the butterfly.
