Compost and earwigs
We have two compost bins, one we are constantly feeding and turning. When this one fills up, we let it cook and start composting in the second been. Unfortunately, once the compost has cooked it becomes a home for earwigs. (Previously it just turned into a worm farm.) So I can't spread the infested compost on my garden. Short of tossing the compost into the city composting bin is there any way I can get rid of the critters?

1. I move finished compost to a wheelbarrow and let it sit in the hot sun for a few hours.
The key is to spread it thinly enough that the bugs will scramble for cover elsewhere. Using a wheelbarrow means that it's easy to scoop up again to apply to the beds.
I always have a few earwigs in the veggie beds but not enough to cause a problem.

You can also place traps around the perimeter of the compost bin area -- give the bugs a better food source. Here's one idea for homemade traps. http://www.gardenplans.com/tip2507.html
