Gotta mow the lawn this weekend

Greening up slowly but surely. Gonna stay ahead of it as much as possible. The leaves need a good mulching. Snapdragons are awesome.

5. Busting up an inch of ice on the driveway

Today it might hit 45 in Ohio. We went cross country skiing 14 times this year, though!

Does your garden in Iowa have the most fantastic topsoil by nature? I have been reading about prarie soils and am rather transfixed.

7. We have mostly clay in this area

It's not easy to work with. We have to amend the soil to make it decent to work with. Some areas of the state have great soil, but not here.

8. We stopped in West Branch last summer

We were making good time on our road trip so we had time to go hike that rail trail north of town after dinner.

From my reading, grassland topsoil is much deeper than forest topsoil; it supports much more wildlife. There was an exhibit on the soil columns at the arboretum here. Who knows what the story is in your locality, though.

9. You were close to a really nice patch of native prairie

There is a town called Rochester very near West Branch. They have an old cemetary with a lot of native grasses and prairie flowers. It's a fascinating place to visit.

10. I have seen a few prarie restoration projects

The parks will have a project to remove non-native species and plant seeds of native plants. There are a few places in central and western Ohio that have prarie remnants. One of them is described in the "Short Bicycle Rides in Ohio" book and, yes, it is at a cemetary.
