I've just planted some Purslane in a large clay pot. I got the

seeds from Sand Mountain Herbs. It's used in salads and cooked. Purslane is a good source of Omega 3.

the fleashy leaves are good for ID so you don't confuse it with spurge.




Spurge Do not eat spurge. Notice the shape of the leaves, and the way the leaves come off the stem. Compare with Purslane.

1. That stuff is a weed around here.

It's funny to me that you'd have to buy seeds for it. Last year I gave up on pulling it all, and switched to trying to eat it all instead. I first realized it was edible almost 20 years ago, when I had a community garden plot that was shared with a lot of immigrants. They were harvesting it, while I was treating it as a weed.

I respect it as an opponent in the garden. Seeds that fall can germinate 40 years later. If you pull it but don't remove it from the soil, it will reroot and make more purslane.

2. If I had the time I could find it growing, but I wanted to see if the

variety sold is different. What I don't use right off, I know a place where it will grow well, so it will be a source for years to come. It grows well in bad soil.

I think it cost about two dollars for several hundred seeds. I'd burn that much gas in finding some that is not in some toxic location.

We've got purslane, dandelions, chickweed and violets all over the place.

I wish I could train the local deer to eat those instead of my hostas, lilies and other garden plants, but no such luck.
