Reviving the Victory Garden
With food and fuel prices soaring, perhaps the

1. Eliminating overly manicured and chemically preserved
grass lawns, and replacing with edible plants, bushes and trees would do wonders for our environment as well as our pocketbooks. I think most people would be amazed how much can be grown in very small areas with raised beds and square-foot gardening techniques. Container-grown plants can have a good yield, and our own dicksteele has shown what can be done with a roof or overhang and some great imagination.

With prices of fuel and food going through the roof, as well as concerns about the safety of our food supply, we are crazy NOT to attempt to grow as much as possible.

I keep seeing vacant lots in my neighborhood and dreaming of community gardens in place of weeds. I don't have the time right now to attempt to organize such, but I hope to by next fall. What a total waste of food-bearing land!!

3. My girlfriend would wipe out my entire lawn to do this
she sees nothing wrong with veggies in the front yard. I'm just so terribly suburban I can't even fathom it. But we have converted most of the back yard into flowers and veggies. Keeps everyone happy (including the Homeowner Association LOL). Wish I was somewhere where I could do something like that in the front as well, seems kinda cool.
