I figured out why I have health issues: I played with a Ouja board as a child!...
OMG...I was listening to my favorite comedy talk show on the radio today and they had some psychic/dowser person going on. She was telling someone that the reason why their house could be haunted was because of playing with a Ouja board. Because ya know the Ouja board lets in the bad spirits because it gives off a low vibration that is attractive..Apparantly if one wants to talk to the spirits one must use a pendulum or rod because it gives off higher frequencies which drives away the evil spirits...So I figure with as much as I played with the Ouja as a teenager I must have been invaded by evul demons which caused me to get sick!

The sad part is this woman really seems to believe this bullshit and was talking about it like a real science. I almost prefer the scam artists..That someone can genuinely believe this...kind of scares me to tell the truth.

2. history of Talking Boards
"Talking Board" are interesting. I've looked but there's no good history of them, mostly just popular books by true believers....

4. These "sincere frauds" are the most pernicious
Sylvia Browne, whatever else can be said of her, doesn't strike me as a fraud. I have concluded that she honestly believes that she's in touch with some higher plane, and that her mystical abilities enable her to help others. James van Praagh is much the same, and more's the pity.

You're right, though--I can almost understand how a scam-artist's mind works, since that person is basically just playing a role. But to succumb to the delusion that the supernatural "plane" is really at work... That's beyond the pale.

Of course, one doesn't need to look far on DU to find any number of people who are also functioning on that same "plane."

Too bad that it might be too obscure to use in real-time against a particular flake...

10. Really? That's disappointing
I was hoping that she was just delusional, and that her acolytes were likewise delusional. It would be sad if she were a deliberate fraud preying on the vulnerabilities of the bereaved.

There's a good chance that you're right, alas...

11. You know, if you are feeling bored..
You could post a poll in GD and ask: Sylvia Browne: Just full of shit or deliberate fraud.... :hide:

21. Honestly, I wouldn't have thought of it without your suggestion
I'm always torn--I don't want to attack people who are obviously grieving and deriving comfort from Browne and other "psychics," but a big part of me just wants to say "what kind of a fool are you?"

It's a tricky balancing act, that's for sure...

Comparing Sylvia brown with quack doctors? When the HELL did psychics get their own School and Residency prgrams? Do they take PSYCATS to get in? And where is the FDPSYCA
(Food drug and psychic authority):banghead:

13. its just that
the way she very deliberately lies and covers up her own mistakes (i.e. the West Virginia Miner Incident) makes it seem unlikely to me that she isn't a deliberate fraud

That the the fact that she lies and covers her mistakes indicates that she's deliberately lying, and not self-deluded

Sorry--I got tripped up on that "unlikely that she isn't" part, which parses just fine, now that I look at it again.

Thanks!

23. I think Sylvia Browne knows
she's not psychic but doesn't mind taking advantage of people as long as she's making money off them. She and other "psychics" make me sick. I wish their gullible followers would wake up. I am disappointed that even some DUers believe in that baloney.
