God Bless the audiophiles

I'm re-wiring the house with this stuff immediately:

http://www.amazon.com/Denon-AKDL1-Dedicated-Link-Cable/dp/B000I1X6PM

6 feet of CAT-5 Ethernet cable for $500.

I am in awe.

A caution to people buying these: if you do not follow the "directional markings" on the cables, your music will play backwards. Please check that before mentioning it in your reviews.

I was disappointed. I consider myself an audiophile - I regularly spend over $1000 on cables to get the ultimate sound. I keep my music-listening room in a Faraday cage to prevent any interference that could alter my music-listening experience. Sending any signal down ordinary copper can degrade the signal considerably. While ordinary listeners might not notice, to somebody with even a rudimentary knowledge of sound, the artifacts are glaring. Denon should have used silver wiring (hermetically sealed inside the rubber sheath to prevent any tarnishing, of course), which has a significantly higher conductivity than copper. Furthermore, Denon needs to treat the wires they use in the cable with a polarity inductor to ensure minimal phase variance.

Needless to say, I returned the cable and wrote an angry letter to the so-called engineers at Denon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Expectation met, July 7, 2008
By ifeelfein (Andover, NJ United States) - See all my reviews
The heat shrink on the package shrank away from my hand as the temperature proved too much for such mortal coils. My anticipation would match my expectations, no this would not be a repeat of the first major league baseball game I saw and the field was so so small. No reality would match my vision, I was sure. When I first laid eyes on this cable no... cable sounds too rough I think ethernet interconnect sounds closer to my feelings. To experience the initial rush of my fingers on this flexing tool of aural pleasures I knew I have come home. This was not a thing to take blithely but to savor every moment every caress. As I fondled this Denon demon that would have me do things I reserve for the most intimate times, the high purity copper wire would surely eliminate adverse effects, which may come on later in the evening. With the cable nearing my nether regions I was nearing a point of no return the rounded plug levers guaranteed it from breaking as I was breaking a sweat in anticipation of connection. Insertion would need to be stabilized from the occurrence of jitter and ripple, which I was now feeling. The tin-bearing copper alloying immediately began to fill that digital void I had been feeling, it shielding me from outside vibrations and drops. The heat emanating from the flouropolymer insulation material was intense yet it stayed flexible which was necessary for the rapid movement the cable was screaming for.. No need for directions marks here as a super fluid motion compassed my moral rectitude. As I lay in a quivering mass it occurs to me that this is what I would like of Denon. To take this cable and ... uh oh the boss is coming.

He talked about it on "The Skeptic's Guide to the Universe" podcast last week. He said, as usual, the manufacturers have suddenly become hard to get in touch with. I wonder if this is what he was talking about?

3. This is well beyond that...

This is cable for digital signals. It's not even audio cable.

5. And some smartasses have fun with the "Q" word...

Quantum Encoding Capabilities, July 14, 2008 -- An important point is being missed here. It's not just getting better ones and zeros. That doesn't matter in the digital realm. This isn't like analogue. Your computer could care less for a more integer like one or a more perfectly empty zero.

This cable goes beyond that. It actually enables quantum digital data transmission.

It's a dedicated ether link cable. Not an ethernet link cable like a lot of know-nothings seem to be touting. This baby hooks you straight into the ether. It's powered by internal subatomic weak nuclear forces (note they use weak nuclear forces to reduce the risk of radiation poisoning), and along the length of the cable, the weak nuclear forces collapse by means of quantum resonance with the ether to yield the data you wanted (and unfortunately the data you don't want as well, it's a quantum thing).

It has two ends, which is where the confusion comes in. You plug one end in if you want to receive data from the ether. The other end is plugged in to use the weak nuclear forces to recharge your battery on the go if you run into an emergency. Some confusion also comes in about uploading. You don't upload into the ether. Since it exists outside of the general time space continuum, it's not subject to the laws of cause and effect. It needs no additions or updates.

Important note: I had a friend who thought he'd be smart and power his electric car with the power supplying side of this cable. It's not meant for high amp pulls or continuous duty cycles. He ended up over heating the cable and causing a space time anomaly. It would have ended the universe had it not been for a freakish physics loophole. Apparently the cable becomes 50% closer each nano-nano-second to imploding our galaxy and all four of it's dimensions, but since it works off of a percentage and not off of a definite value countdown, it will never actually reach the crucial point but merely come closer and closer. Quantum physics are so quarky some times.

Schrödinger's Catbox, July 9, 2008 -- At last! The quandary regarding the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics being applied to everyday objects is resolved. On behalf of the human race, I say "thank you, Denon".

To achieve said results, simply both purchase and not purchase the cable. It should also be noted that reading this review it will influence the outcome.

3.7 out of 5 stars (192) $19,999.95 Ahh, now we're talking ...

The JL421 Badonkadonk is a completely unique, extremely rare land vehicle and battle tank. Designed with versatility in mind, the Donk can transport cargo or a crew of five internally or on the roof, and can be piloted from within the armored shell or from an exposed standing position through the hatch, thanks to special one-way steel mesh armor windows and a control stick that pivots up and down to allow piloting from the standing or seated positions. The interior is fully carpeted and cozy, with accent lighting and room for up to five people. A 400 watt premium sound system with PA is mounted to project sound both into the cabin and outward from behind the windows. The exterior is a steel shell with a rust patina, and features head and tail lights, turn signal lights, trim lighting, underbody lighting, fixed slats protecting the windows, and a unique industrial-strength rubberized flexible skirt that shields and protects the wheels to within an inch of the ground, while still allowing for enough flex to give clearance over bumpy and uneven terrain. Master power, ignition, all lighting, and stereo features are controlled from a single switchboard to the left of the driver, again accessible from either the seated or standing position. Standard drive is an air-cooled, 6hp Tecumseh gasoline (unleaded only) engine, with centrifugal clutch, giving the Donk a top speed of 40 mph. This vehicle is not licensed for use on public roads, and is intended as a recreational vehicle only. Badonkadonks are produced on an order-by-order basis, with each one having it's own unique set of features. With your order is included unlimited consultations with the designer and manufacturer concerning all relevant options (a representative from NAO will contact you shortly after your order). Price does not include shipping and handling.

7. Okay which of you smart asses wrote this review....

It gets me closer to The Lord, June 11, 2008

If I could use a rusty boxcutter to carve a new orifice in my body that's compatible with this link cable, I would already be doing it. I can just imagine the pure musical goodness that would flow through this cable into the wound and fill me completely -- like white, holy light. Holding this cable in my hands actually makes me feel that much closer to the Lord Jesus Christ. I only make $6.25/hr at Jack In The Box, but I saved up for three months so I could have this cable. It sits in a shrine I constructed next to my futon in Mother's basement.

I only gave it four stars in my review because I can't find music that is worthy enough to flow through this utterly perfect interconnect.

  :patriot:

8. I used to participate in the old usenet audio forums...
...and the level of strident insistence on crazy techno-woo bullshit was amazing.

I once wrote what I thought had to be a completely over-the-top satire about the "sound" of various "interconnects", and still had a couple of people e-mail afterward, apparently straight-faced, asking for my advice and opinions about other brands.

name-of-the-person-I-was-responding-to wrote:
Monster interconnect is terrible. I'm not sure about all the models, but I have heard two and both sounded contaminated and 'dirty'. A noticable increase in colouration is very evident.

I found that Monster cable sounds wobbly but astringent. There is a sort of bluish violet coloring to high frequencies, notably between 12.33 kHz and 14.08 kHz (judging by ear, of course). Imaging is pretty good, but I feel like the performers are turned slightly to the right in their chairs and won't look at me.

I currently use Audio-Technica interconnect. However, I am unsatisfied with it's sound, as it sounds lazy and 'slow'.

Hmmm. The pumping of the noise floor that I heard with Audio-Technica added a somewhat exuberant feel, like someone briskly jogging. I was let down, however, by the sticky feeling that the cable imparted on the lower midrange. It made me feel as if every other note sung by a tenor was sticking to my shoes like gum on a movie theater floor. Just a rough analogy, of course, but I'm sure you know what I mean.

I have heard Crystal Line interconnect, which sounds much sharper, clearer, and focussed. Also sounds thinner and more analytical than the above two, but these are minor points. However, it costs (in Australian dollars) $250!!! Which is a ridiculous price to pay for 0.5m of cable. I could better spend the money elsewhere in my system.

Crystal Line sounds good at first, but after a while it loses its convictions. Sort of like the difference between campaign rhetoric and what really happens when someone gets elected. If you threaten the cable with being replaced, however, sometimes the performance will improve.

Trust me.
