Getting to know you...getting to know all about you (pictures)
Edited on Sat Jul-19-08 04:44 PM by Heddi
Sorry, I just can't have serious conversation lately....work is crazy, it's too hot...need levity. ugh. Oh, and now my fingers are stained yellow because of the turmeric I used last night for Curry. Urgh.

So, I figured, since we've all been being friendly and giving the gifts that keep on giving (banana slicer, anyone??), I thought maybe I'd start a little Skeptical Scientific Photo Thread and let us introduce ourselves a little better.

Here we go!

My name is Heather, but you can call me Heddi. Or Hey You. Or Debbie (someone at work always calls me Debbie. I don't think I look like a debbie)

This is my apartment. I mean CONDO. When you pay more than $1500 a month for a 700sqft place, it's not an apartment anymore

notice there are no teddy bears....

The Fetus I stole from the pro-life booth at the fair

Me being so serious and life-saving as a nurse. Look at how hard I work every night. OMG LOL WTF I work so hard!

Me & Mr Heddi on our wedding day, nearly 8 years ago! Now he has long hair, and I have a sarcastic attitude!

-----

Show me you!

76. Bass drums?
LOL I just can't say it without sounding, uh, suggestive:

HOW MANY INCHES?

(I've marched all three, bass, snare... and tenor. Damn, but I just love carrying a tenor drum rack. I also was in COLORGUARD in the Madison Scouts in 1994. I auditioned for their cymbal line. No, don't ask- I don't know how it happened either; I'd never touched a flag in my life before that, and as such, got cut halfway through the season. I got good enough, I could teach it if I had to, though, despite being cut. Colorguard in DCI = self-abuse.)

78. 24, 26, 28, and 30
I usually played 30, or 26, whichever was needed. We tended to know everyone's parts, in case one of us wasn't at a particular game. I marched bass and quads in high school, but only bass in college. and, i guess i can't call it marching in college, because we weren't the marching band (and god help you if you got it wrong :eyes:)

43. Not at all, sadly,
Rock stars traditionally end up producing double-album meisterworks telling us "What It's All About" or that Jebus came from Alpha Centauri with his Message Of Lurve but is misunderstood by an uncaring world hungry for little more than reality television and Kentucky Fried Offal Parts.

So I have no problem with pics.
Here is one from a recent meetup I had with some other DU'ers when I was in Minnesota going to the Mayo Clinic:

And some of you may recognize the picture on the shirt that my friend (temeah if you ever hang in the Lounge) made for me..special....

My name is Susan (turtle was an old cat of mine) and I am of course an employee/shill for a large biotech that was recently bought out by a Pharma so I am indeed teh evul! Unfortunately, they like their secrets ya know..so no pictures of me in the dorky eye protection and eye wear....
Oh and here's a supernerdy picture of me playing my new favorite addiction Guitar Hero:

This is Sarah. She's my ex-fiance but my current best friend (it's a long story).

I could top your lab coat by getting my pic in something similar to this but I don't think my employer would be too thrilled about that.

We have disposable suits and tuck our hoods in so it's slightly different.

I never post pics on the internet, even on a friendly forum like this one, cos I'm a bit paranoid about internet stalkers. The background to said paranoia - and perhaps also to some of my dislike of anti-science woos - is that many of us in my university are explicitly on a hate-list of animal-rights extremists, with our names and addresses and the remark that we are 'vivisector scum' who need to be 'dealt with severely' - even though most of us don't work with animals. Three of my close colleagues had their cars torched, and there have sometimes been threats of worse. At least one version of the list is on an American site, which is apparently why the police can't get it taken down. (But, but, but, you mean it's not only those eeeevil Muslims who have extremists???!!!1111)

At any rate, I'm Ann, and I live in England where it sometimes seems that the rain it raineth every day, but I like it here! I'm a university teacher and researcher in developmental psychology, and the nearest I get to doing cruel experiments on animals is giving maths tests to children. Oh, and I own lots of stock in Big Yak OF COURSE!

P.S. And you all posted great pics, and Mr Blur has a lovely garden (trust a Brit to comment on that before anything else!)

I was going to do my bedroom red but I wound up getting black furniture, so I canned that idea. I still might do the kitchen walls red but I'm not sure. I have lots of windows so I also thought of getting some counter tops with red in them and doing the window trim red as well. Too bad I have no money.

42. We have no money either
We bought a lovely wreck of a Dutch Colonial Revival this past May and almost our entire renovation budget was ate up in putting a new roof and sheathing on it, replacing the knob and tube wiring and upgrading the electrical service. So now we're stuck doing a lot of the renovation our selves. Neither of us is particularly handy in that way, but it's amazing what you find yourself able to do when you have to do it.

Anyway, here's our inspiration for the kitchen. We're not sure if we're going to replicate this look exactly, but so far the red floor is exciting.

44. I can afford things like paint
although as I discovered I can't paint well and using that blue tape around the trim didn't seem to do much. My place is 2 story so I have sort of a foyer with the 2 story tall ceiling where my stairs are that I'm not sure I'd try to paint myself. Similar ceiling in the kitchen. What I can't afford right now are nice counter tops. The first thing I'd do though is get a gas stove (red if available). I have a gas hot water heater 15 feet from my stove, and the builders couldn't put a little gas line in for a gas stove!? Technically these are condos so I have to get my neighbor's permission to install a gas line. One neighbor I have called the police on repeatedly for noise in the middle of the night (banging on the door is either not heard due to music or effective for just that night) so I'm not sure how that's going to work out when I get around to it.

At the house we're fixing up we have Crazy Obsessive Lawn Care Lady next door who has already expressed her displeasure with us a couple of times because we didn't immediately mow the lawn or trim the big bush in front as soon as we closed on the house. Actually, now that I think about it, she was harping on us about the lawn even before we bought the house.

We have a great used appliance place here that we got our gas stove and refrigerator from. They even removed for free the old refrigerator with alien life growing in it and dead electric stove that the previous owners had left behind.

I feel your pain on the counter tops too. The house we bought had sat vacant for at least two years, possibly longer, and had a large hole in the flat roof above the back part of the kitchen so there was massive water damage. Originally, when we thought we'd have the money, we wanted to rip out the old ugly cabinets and counters and replace them with something sexy, but that's going to have to wait. And although the roof is fixed, we're not sure when we're going to be able to repair/replace the kitchen ceiling. Actually, we're going to have to replace the old paneling that was nailed to the framing too. It's in pretty rough condition. And then there's the bathroom... Yeesh!

33. I've never posted my pic at DU before but what the hey
It's not like my real-life persona is any secret, or more than a click or two away from my DU profile. So here's me about two years ago.

And here's Admiral Nelson.

48. I don't like pictures of myself,
Edited on Mon Jul-21-08 06:45 PM by Codeine
but here goes.

This is me at Fairmount Park in Riverside, CA, where I recently moved after losing my house.

Here's my wargame room, complete with mysterious alien technology.

And in case that photo failed to illustrate how scrawny and pale I am, here's a few from my recent weeklong trip to a wargaming convention in Tempe, AZ. I'm the fellow with the dapper goatee and the distressingly retreating hairline.

Oh, and my real name is Jason, I am utterly bereft of formal education, and I work as a grocer in southern California.

62. Here are my pics....in the right place this time.

This is me after I shaved my head.

This is me a little hung over in Puerto Vallarta.

This is me during my brief stint as the 6th backstreet boy (I'm really young here).

This is me in desperate need of some crest white strips.

This is what happens when my girlfriend lets me take the bag off my head.

I have another pic with my gf in, but I gotta ask her if I can post it before I do.

Sorry I'm not formally giving you my name, but I have published a couple of things and I'm applying for jobs, so I think I'll protect my anonymity. I figure a couple pics wouldn't hurt though.

65. Lovely pictures of you all
Although they're not as interesting as the nekkid versions you all plastered over at the password protected board we use.

Here is me from just this last week, avec eye-liner.

I find it interesting to see other operatives' appearances when their human shell is grafted onto their reptillian humanoid bodies.

You're a cool-lookin' dude.

69. I'm afraid I have to join LeftishBrit...
In staying visually anonymous. As you all know, I work/live in the Middle East. I'm sure you can figure out why I don't particularly want every Tom, Dick and Mahmoud to know exactly what I look like.

The fact that I fell out of the Ugly Tree and hit every branch on the way down, of course, has NOTHING at all to do with my decision.

I would like to thank everyone who posted. It is fascinating, being able to put faces to the nicks. A meet-up with all you lunatics would certainly be a night to remember. And old-movie fans may recall "A Night To Remember" as the title of a movie about the Titanic...

71. We should have a Group meet-up on Great Yak Day -
Although we'd need to consult the ancient Mayan scrolls to try to calculate what day of which year that might fall on.
