I want to barf.
The hatred and slander of medical professionals on this board really disgusts me this time. There was a thread about MRSA (some idiot insisting that since they hadn't HEARD about the commonality of it it MUST be a coverup:eyes: ) and someone insisted that you have to be careful with questioning the word of medical people. Because if you do they are likely to retaliate and DELIBERATELY infect one with a Staph infection!:wtf:
Thats just vile. I have never EVER heard of this. Why the fuck do people believe such stupid shit?
:banghead:

6. I've come to the conclusion that most people are stupid.
Or perhaps I should say that most people are unintelligent, because I think stupidity implies a lack of inherent ability. I think most people could be intelligent if they wanted to be, but most people don't like to think about things. They would rather take the lazy way out and rely on heuristics, conspiracy theory, or ingrained prejudice and fear.

Of course, the whole cognitive miser thing is really a staple of the human condition (or so I have come to accept). I think we are the weird ones simply because we do like to think about things.

On point, though, I think many here have an innate distrust of any kind of authority whatsoever. I think, in many respects, a healthy questioning of authority is a good thing (esp. when it comes to government, and esp. when it comes to the Bush administration), but I also think that it can be taken way too far into the realm of pseudo-solipsism and that anyone who claims to have any kind of knowledge must be in on the fix. I think that's particularly true with the medical profession because it is a field that lends itself well to fear (as there are plenty of scary things when you start talking about health and medicine). That fear, in turn, just throws gasoline on the fire of the whole cynical attitude that some have when it comes to authority, and then you get things like "THEY WILL GIFE YOU TEH STAFF!!!one1"

At least, that's my take.

8. People like to think they're smart by knowing about the big conspiracy
"All you stupid people believe the official story! I'm clearly smarter because I know the truth!"

As for having knowledge means part of the conspiracy, I think that's true too. Look at just about any thread on vaccinations. If you try to discuss anything scientific you work for the evil big pharma that wants to kill us all (so who are their product purchasers if we're all dead?). It just means 'I'm not knowledgeable about this topic so I will make ad hominims to avoid the issue.'

This whole thing explains all the posters at ICAAC today on MRSA- they're infecting us all on purpose to get more research dollars!

9. Or else
they'd just rather rely on someone else to do their thinking for them, so they end up swallowing whatever they're spoon fed by the media or their favorite web site, figuring (apparently) that as long as some other person has (they believe) already thought about the issue, why should THEY have to think about it too?

10. that's a good point, actually
it's not that they don't want well-researched info, its just that they don't want to actually be the ones to research it

7. 'If I haven't heard of it there must be a cover up'
If I haven't heard of something I assume it's because I'm really busy at work and having a life. If, on the other hand, I'm a know it all fuckwad with too much time on my hands and worried about celebrity gossip instead of real news maybe I'd think there was a cover up, that coincidentally is being discussed on the inter tubes.

I don't even know the thread you're referring to, so the above statement is just being a smartass and not knowing anything about the poster.

11. LOL it was certainly a test for me
I was going to cross post it in the Health forum but just gave up in disgust. I haven't been back to see if the poster you are referring to finally calmed down and listened to reason. There are some really nutty people out there. :woohoo:

How to secretly infect patients that get uppity with me, and how to decide what to infect them with based on how uppity they are...

14. The same reason...
Edited on Tue Oct-28-08 03:22 PM by dawgmom
...they believe that the government already has the cure for cancer, but is keeping it to itself because the medical establishment makes so much money off cancer.

The same reason they believe that the government created AIDS and deliberately infected African Americans with it, in an effort to kill off the Black race.

The same reason....oh, I could go on and on. Did you know that cervical cancer is caused by the barrier method of contraception? That's right. Women need to have exposure to semen, or they get cervical cancer.

I could go on and on. Ignorance is apparently more interesting than reason. Actually, I think it's the same type of people who believe in conspiracy theories in general. A basic paranoid personality.

15. How do these people get thru life?
Edited on Sun Nov-02-08 12:13 PM by onager
I often wonder that.

Oddly enough, they remind me of extreme right-wing Fundie Xians. Or maybe not so odd. I guess you're correct that it's a "basic paranoid personality" on both the Left and Right.

For amusement I often zip around the internets laughing at the Fundie sites.

And often ask myself the Subject question: how do these people manage to step of the house and get thru the day? Damn! Anything can happen out there! You might run into a non-white person or a Muslim or an atheist or a gay couple. Scary!

I see the same tone from the Leftist PCTs. If everything is a conspiracy or cover-up, how the heck do you function? The ATM machine might be uploading your financial data direct to Dick Cheney's laptop. The doctor could be hosing you with experimental drugs. Etc.

What a miserable way to live.

But if I posted anything like this outside our little nuthouse, I'd get a bunch of replies smirking about how I need to learn the real story. Followed by 4,000 links pointing to The Experts...all of whom write as though the English language did them great harm once and they are taking revenge on it.

Megalinks are another way they resemble the Fundies.

Sorry for rambling, your post just set me off. Happens all the time!
