I'm sorry but marijuana is not a cure all!
So there's a thread about a new drug that could help alzheimer's patients and the woos are shitting all over it claiming that marijuana is a better treatment than any drug. Uh NO! Marijuana has some nice medicinal properties including treating glaucoma and easing nausea and pain in cancer victim, but its not a miracle drug. There are as many studies that show that its damaging to memory and brain function as it is to being helpful. In fact, in some cases its made patients with brain diseases become much worse!
I suppose its part of the old wives tale/woos belief that if only marijuana were legalized pharmaceuticals wouldn't be needed.
Although many illeagal drugs have some medicinal uses that doesn't mean in general they are healthy for you.
I'm tired of people shitting on legitimate scientific research because they believe weed should be legal..thats what the arguments smack of to me, people looking for legitimate reasons to smoke.

1. Some of the smartest people I have met have been advocates for the legalization...
of marijuana.

Then again, some of the stupidest people I have met have been advocates for the legalization of marijuana. I'm betting that they, also, can use computers.

2. Well, I'm all for the decriminalisation of marijuana.
Not saying it would save the world, mind you.

5. I'm for decriminalizing simple possession.
In addition, I think the punishment for possession w/ intent should be significantly reduced. (i.e. it should just be regulated like any other Schedule II drug)

And no, it wouldn't save the world, but I think it would do a number of good things: cut out the bottom of the black market, free up a lot of funds for state governments, LEOs, not to mention free up time of the judiciary, and would not result in the pain and suffering of people who, in all reality, are smoking a weed that gives you the munchies

3. A treatment for alzheimer's? Cool.
That would be the first one, wouldn't it?

Yup, mary jane has some real pharmacutical value, as do opiates, but it is no cure-all and with excess use it can make people lazy and stupid.

4. Some people love to exaggerate what it, and hemp in general, can do
I've seen many posts on DU claiming that hemp (ie with low THC) could solve global warming, and any possible food crisis, if only it was legal to grow it. They've heard it's easy to cultivate, and that it grows quickly, and somehow come to the conculsion that it's a wonder plant, able to grow anywhere and be harvested for wonderful amounts of seed (for oil), fibrous material (for just about anything structural - there was a claim on DU that mixing it with cement produces a material cheaper than concrete, just as strong, and about 1 fifth the density), and biomass for burning. They ignore that it is legal in various countries, and is still a minor crop; you'd think those countries would be rich - rich! - with their solution to the world's problems.

Wishful thinking about ones favourite recreational drug does not make for logical posts.

7. Hemp???

"Wishful thinking about ones favourite recreational drug does not make for logical posts."

The same could be said about reactionary responses to anything that appears to question existing scientific and technological assertions. The OP questions the value of medicinal marijauna in the face of thousands of studies that prove its' efficacy.

And now you add to this nonsense with your bias against "hemp"...???

The only reason I would speak of hemp and marijauna in the same post would be to note that you and the OP know nothing about plants and that you use that lack of knowledge to impede the progress of public interest initiatives.

8. I do not have a 'bias against hemp'
Edited on Wed Feb-11-09 04:26 PM by muriel_volestrangler
Search DU for what I've said about it.

And try reading the OP, rather than coming up with your usual knee-jerk "you are all shills and nay-sayers" rubbish that you pollute this forum with.

"The OP questions the value of medicinal marijauna" is so plainly a complete reversal of the truth that you are making a fool of yourself.

9. Grow up.

And please provide a link where you found this quote: "you are all shills and nay-sayers"

I just respond to what's in front of me. If you want to equate "hemp" with 'ones' favorite recreational drug', expect to be called on it.

"I'm tired of people shitting on legitimate scientific research because they believe weed should be legal..thats what the arguments smack of to me, people looking for legitimate reasons to smoke."

"There are as many studies that show that its damaging to memory and brain function as it is to being helpful. In fact, in some cases its made patients with brain diseases become much worse!"

If this doesn't sound like "questioning..." to you, give your head a shake.

12. try working on your reading comprehension
I NEVER said that marijuana doesn't have medical benefits. It clearly does. HOWEVER it is NOT a miracle drug that will cure everything as woos seem to think. And as stated before there are many scientific studies that show it actually can WORSEN medical conditions. But I forgot. All the people with alzheimers just wanted to forget things right?:sarcasm:

13. The point is....

...with your clear bias, I don't consider you an authority on the medical and therapeutic qualities of cannabis. It is outside your frame of reference. You clearly have no direct experience with the drug other than what you've read in pamphlets endorsed by Nancy Reagan.

...and another thing. "Woo's" don't think it will cure "everything". They do think it should at least be given a chance to show what it CAN cure.

15. I've actually
had some experience with this drug personally. And I know someone who is a long time user. And I can tell you its DEFINITELY had deleterious affect on his memory. Don't patronize me you idiot. You have no clue about my experiences.
Judging by the lack of intelligent content in your posts its quite obvious to me that you are a long term drug user. Probably dropped a bunch of acid too.
And its been studied in many clinical trials...thats where I get my data from..I'd post the links if I thought you'd BOTHER reading them.

18. I know people too...

A neurologist, a couple of GP's, and some lab assistants like you who have all used cannabis like myself, for over 40 years. We're all healthy, happy and educated...and you're not.

By all means, post the links....

I haven't read the one about men growing breasts for a long time. That'll be fun....

22. so what?
I know people who smoke 3 packs a day from the age of 13 and died of natural causes at 90 something - doesn't mean smoking can't cause cancer.

I know people who mined asbestos for 30 years without incident, doesn't it can't give you mesothelioma

I'm for the total legalistion (and proper regulation just like with alcohol) of ALL drugs, and have smoked a huge amount of opt daily for nearly 20 years, doesn't mean I'm blind to it's negative effects.

Just like I'd be against a reintroduction of alcohol prohibition without being blind to the negative effects it can have.

How is this controversial in any way shape or form?

16. I'm confused. First you say:
"...thousands of studies that prove its' efficacy."

Then you say:

"it should at least be given a chance to show what it CAN cure."

If there have been thousands of chances to show what it cures, what's the problem?

Are you stoned now?
