Is anyone on Facebook or Myspace or anything like that
I'm 32 (33 in a few days woooo) and I have just started to become interested in pretending to be interested in the lives of the people that I really didn't like in High School and use these methods as a way to passively pretend that I give a shit about their 1 quarter spent at Community College (That is when I fount out thet Coledge was not for me! quoth one such....person) and their 4 children fathered by 5 different men. I also enjoy the status updates that make their lives seem so much more meaningful than they really are (Proudly proclaiming "Large and In Charge!!!" sounds so much more affirmative than "Moving In To The Double Wide next year!!!" Sorry. That's classist, and I admit it).

Anyhoo, if any of ya'll have any of those, PM me and we can be friends, and I can feign interest in countless photographs of your cats and family members I'll never ever meet (thankfully). IN exchange, you can see countless photographs of my cats doing mildly interesting things and more emo self portraits of me via bathroom mirror than you can shake a stick at.

1. You know, sometimes I think you might be a little sarcastic.
And while everything you said was spot-on, I don't see how this belongs in this forum. Plus I have a facebook.

3. In addition to being a bastion of pure reason, wisdom, and intellect
Edited on Tue Feb-24-09 08:26 PM by Orrex
This group is also used by us "skeptics" as a means of venting to/among our fellow Big Pharma Shills. It's been this way for as long as I can remember (which isn't all that long, but long enough). I note that other theme-specific posting groups similarly show a sense of camaraderie that goes beyond specific posts on specifically skeptical subjects.

For my part, I admit that I've come here on more than one occasion to share a story or simply to gripe about this or that real-world experience that may or may not have to do with skepticism or the debunking of pseudoscience.

After all, where else can we go to rally the troops?

4. Orrex is right, I posted the Chicken Police video in here.
I lurk here and in the A/A group even when I'm taking a break from DU. It's nice to feel you're among the sane (or the insane as the case may be).
I consider everyone here a friend, and Heddi is one of the best.

8. well, because I'm interested in THESE PEOPLE being my friends
Edited on Tue Feb-24-09 10:26 PM by Heddi
not every single person on DU, which is why I didn't post it in the lounge or anything. And I don't really have the desire to PM everyone that posts in this forum to ask them, so I do it publically.

And if you think it's so terribly off topic as to detract from the mission of this forum, ask the mods to lock or delete it.

9. For goodness sake.
Does the saying "You can dish it out, but you can't take it" mean anything to you?

I really didn't mean to start a "thing" here.

10. I fail to see what "dishing it out but not taking it" has to do with what you wrote
You specifically asked how what I posted was relevant to the forum. I explained it to you, and suggested that if you felt it was disruptive to the overall message of the forum that you ask that it be removed or locked.

I'm not sure where the confusion lies....

14. Heddi can certainly 'take it'
Ask her about the cavity search she recently had to endure for her job.

Though I'm not sure that "endure" is the right word for it, from what I've heard...

5. I signed up and was immediately flagged by a silly cow who still owes me $300.00.
I refused to answer her calls, blocked her email and moved away, I thought I'd heard/seen the last of her.

I haven't been back since.

13. No. Enough assholes can reach me via email.
With the best intentions...and we all know where that leads...my Mom gave my email address to some of her friends in rural SC.

Ever since I've been swamped with glurge, much of it pro-Republican and even worse, pro-Jesus.

Sometimes it's like an internet time machine. The other day I got the vintage hoax claiming Bill Gates wants to send me money for testing a new email program. I didn't think anyone had fallen for that one since about 1996.

I really like the chirpy religious glurge with the implied threat at the end: "Send this RIGHT NOW to 10 people who need a smile...or else."

Sometimes I'm really tempted to reply: "All my internet friends are already smiling. At your expense."

17. are you from SC?
I'm from Charleston/N.Charleston/Goose Creek and hubby is from Myrtle Beach/Conway.

I miss being able to order grits to go, and to ask for and get sweet tea anywhere I want without being looked at like I have 9308 heads "sweet tea...um...you mean tea, with sugar...????" oy

19. I sure am!
Grew up in Oconee County, at the opposite end of the state from you guys. Up in that weird little northwestern corner. The state lines of GA, NC and Tenn. are all fairly close, which always made the ol' home place a favorite residence for bootleggers and moonshiners. Like my Mom's neighbor, but I think he finally got caught one time too many and got out of that bid'ness.

That neighbor is a nice enough guy, but man, he is like a living lab experiment documenting the White Trash gene. Eclectic collection of old appliances and dead cars, spread across the yard so everybody in the neighborhood can enjoy them. Along with 3 or 4 mo-bile homes. When one started rusting and falling apart, he would just haul another one onto the property and move into it.

That's because the county doesn't have any of those evil Communistic zoning laws. Which also meant they couldn't do jack when one local entrepreneur built a huge strip club. Ha!

I know what you mean about the food. I just spent the last Xmas season back there and had grits almost every morning. Everybody orders "sweet tea" in restaurants, and the waitperson knows exactly what they mean. If you didn't ask for sweet tea, you'd probably go down on the list of suspected foreign Communists. I asked for a glass of red in a restaurant once and I'm still on the list of Confirmed Homosechshuls.

20. I keep thinking that maybe I'm getting too out-of-touch...
by not being on Facebook, by not having a Twitter account, etc. But not enough to worry about it. :)

Because I'm not exactly a social butterfly it's hard to imagine much use I'd have for these things.
