On how religious right wingers ought to be as far away as possible
Here is a well-known British Christian Tory blogger attacking the Bishop of Oxford (who is a very nice bloke even if I don't generally need the services of a bishop) for being too liberal *and* my secular ex-MP for good measure.

As I live in Oxford, I don't need this!

You might be interested in his 'Cranmer's Conservative Creed', further down the page

Cranmer's Conservative Creed
I believe in one Party,
Preserver of all that is good in our Constitution,
And of Individual Freedom, Limited Government, National Defence and the Rule of Law:
And in one Party Leader, the only-begotten of the entire Membership...

Who for us Members, and for our earthly salvation came down from CCHQ,
And was invited by Her Majesty to form a Government,
And was made Prime Minister.
And was vilified also for us under the BBC....

And sitteth on the right hand of the Speaker.
And he shall come again with a larger majority to annihilate the Socialists and the Liberals:
And his Government shall have no end...

And I look for victory at the General Election,
And for the realisation of the policies to come.
Amen.

Ugh just ugh.

After this sort of thing, the royals seem sensible in comparison. At least the wedding was very pretty, with lots of funny hats..

1. IIRC, it wasn't "secularists" who burned his namesake...
I'll join you in the multiple ughs...

And thanks for mentioning the Great Nuptials. Just so I can say - I am SO glad that shindig is finally over.

Over here in the Original Former Colonies, it's been non-stop, wall-to-wall blathering about that thing. The TV channels have exploited every possible tie-in to the Royal Wedding. Even Turner Movie Channel got in the act, showing some bizarre marathon about random princesses and royalty and yes, the old Fred Astaire movie "Royal Wedding."

A local Public Television channel aired a multi-hour/multi-night documentary, "History of the Windsors." Generally fawning, but it at least hinted at some of the juicier scandals and such. e.g., Princess Margaret and Peter Townsend. I enjoyed that because of all the old video footage.

They didn't mention one of my favorite wisecracks, from the not normally humorous Kaiser Wilhelm II: "Oh, we went to see a play last night. Shakespeare's 'The Merry Wives of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.'"

2. On royal weddings, royal scandals, the Cranmer blog, and Cranmer's political idol, all in one post..
The same Cranmer blog has had several posts on the Royal Wedding, using it to prove that Britain is a True Christian Country, Traditional Marriage is Virtuous, etc. Most clearly in the following post:

http://archbishop-cranmer.blogspot.com/2011/04/this-royal-wedding-is-act-of-faith-in.html

Except that not all royals have been very traditional in their marriages; and some have been rather good at procreation of children outside the traditional institution. We all know about Charles II; a less well-known example is William IV, uncle and predescessor of Queen Victoria. He eventually did marry Princess Adelaide, and apparently was faithful to her. She produced no living children; hence the succession of his niece to the throne. However, earlier, for 20 years, he Lived in Sin with an Irish actress called Dorothea Bland, or more often by her stage name of Mrs. Jordan. They had 10 children, but as those 10 children were born out of wedlock, their descendants did not end up ruling Britain.

Or did they?

It turns out that one of King William IV's direct descendants is David Cameron.

I'm not sure what moral or conclusion the great Cranmer would derive from that story.
