Battlefield 2 ships tomorrow!!!!
woot!

I have played the demo a bunch online and I love it. I'm really digging the squad based combat and that players can nominate/mutiny against a squad commander. I am also looking forward to the VOIP so teammates can coordinate their efforts into some devastating tactics.

A few buddies and I are thinking about renting a private server to host our little weekly frag fests. We are looking to get about 5-6 dudes to kick in some money so we can keep the rental fee under $10.

C'mon! I can't be the only one excited about this game. Anyone else planning to pick this one up?

1. I'm Excited About It. Only problem is...
there are a lot of problems with it and a patch does not appear to be on the horizon. Just to give you an idea of what I'm talking about:

turn the lighting options to low and off and keep shadows on. Now, load up the Gulf Of Oman and take your squad to the construction site. Stay on the ground floor of the building that is under construction and have your squad-mates go up stairs. Now look up. You can see their shadows through the floor, giving you their exact location.

I bet I'm the first person to publish this little gem. Not to mention the fact that the helos suck, (which EA and DICE say they are not going to change)and infantry weapons suck. Oh and I love how touching a moving vehicle will get you instantly killed. It has great potential but I'll stick with the demo and DCF until a patch is released.

2. I have noticed the vehicle touch=instant death thing......
but I imagine that a patch may not be immediately released, but I don't think it will be too long in coming. I think the delay that pushed the release from March to June will address some of the things you noted.

But, I understand the your reticence about buying a flawed product. I bought Temple of Elemental Evil, and I waited the two months before they patched that turd before I even loaded it. And I think the pressure of dissatisfied fans on the games website helped push along the QA process. I believe that if you consider the popularity of BF42, EA will not readily push a flawed product out its door. I could be wrong, I have been before.

3. Actually, From What I Understand...
the shipping version of the game is actually behind the demo version :(. Make no mistake though, once it is fixed I will get it. Hell, I'm having a hard enough time not running out to get it right after work.

Oh crap, it's after work. :bounce:

4. I'm still playing the demo...
BF1942 I liked a little -- not enough to go out and purchase it. When Vietnam was released, I went out and picked it up. It was decent though I never got the hang of piloting choppers... or jets for that matter. Planes were a little easier to fly in 1942, I think.

The infantry combat seems to be improved in BF2 (which was a major turn-off for me in the previous games of the series) though it still isn't quite as fun or good as Day of Defeat.

I was suprised that the game runs as well as it does on the highest settings. I have a pretty good machine but I wasn't expecting it to run as smoothly as it does.

I'll probably end up picking up a copy though this isn't one of those titles I'll be rushing out to get my hands on, on release day.

6. Here Is A Short Post-Patch Review.
Yeah, I broke down and bought it. It has lots of problems but man is it good. Once you get past the bullet deviation, the infantry combat is stellar. Could use more maps. Specifically larger maps geared toward armor and helos. I'm sure that will come later though. I'm going to try some map designs myself as soon as the tools are released. You don't need super HW to run it either. Most of my stuff is 1-2 years old, tech wise, and it runs great.
