The Silent Hill film is coming
www.welcometosilenthill.com

I was hoping someone would do this. The track record of game to screen has really generally sucked, though... let's hope this one's a keeper.

1. Has there been ANY good films from games? I thought Far Cry has potential,
but they have that hack Uwe Boll on it, so it'll suck. But that could've been an amusing Bruce Willis "Die Hard" or Schwarzenegger type flick.

4. Personally, I do like some of the Pokemon movies...
...but that probably puts me in an especially geeky minority. At least I have a child to entertain as an excuse :P

Pokemon may not qualify since the movies are based primarily on the TV series (and occupy space in the TV series plotline), which is based on the video games, so the corellation is indirect. Then the video games incorporate characters introduced in the movies, and the cycle continues. Pokemon is pretty much a media phenom unto itself, really; I don't know of any other franchises that can say they sport a popular card game, about a dozen video games of various sorts, 7 feature-length movies, an ongoing cartoon series with several hundred episodes, and bob-only-knows how much printed material, both legit and illicit, including manga and hentai variants. The stuffed "animals" and action figures are a bonus.

I can't think of too many other movies worth mentioning offhand. "Good" may be a stretch, but Resident Evil was at least watchable. Other than that, I almost dread a good video game getting reworked as a movie. Video games are all about immersion and challenge, plotline optional, but movies have to substitute plotline and drama for the active participation of a gamer.

5. In the case of Silent Hill, there's a bit more potential
IIRC, the world of Silent Hill is drawn from the writings of H. P. Lovecraft, which are "horrible" enough to make good horror films all on their own. The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, IMO, is particularly good).

I think I'll be seeing this, if only because it's Silent Hill.

7. Resident Evil was awesome
It was a more "kinetic" game but Silent Hill was just downright creepy - in a good way! That fog. That fraking radio! Run away! Run away! :-D To each its own - both have a spot in my heart. Ah, those marathon gaming weekends after classes.

8. Good to see I'm not alone
I rather enjoyed RE. It hardly raped the original anywhere near as much as Uwe does to movies.

The first one. Even my parents like it.

Edit: It even had a catchy tune.

11. my god, you're right. it was actually pretty decent.
who'da thunk that one of the lead contenders for best video game to movie adaptation would be mortal kombat? i actually can't even think of another video game to movie adaptation that remotely comes close... if they ever did a Panzer Dragoon Saga live movie that's as true to the game as possible i'd probably break down and cry.
