Bioshock
Edited on Wed Aug-22-07 12:53 PM by YOY
bioRocks my bioSocks.

If you don't have it yet GET IT. It's scaring me nine-ways-to-midnight with it's creepy arthouse look and atmosphere as well as fantastic overall gameplay. The story shows a underwater dystopia that took Ayn Rand's libertarian mindset and created a city of the 1950's tech and ideas gone mad.

It is a true successor to System Shock and System Shock 2, this game has to be the best thing I've played all year.

PC and X-Box 360 owners, GET IT! GET IT or Big Daddy will have words with your pet kitten.

Gauranteed that you'd be creeped he hell out by the music too: "Somewhere....beyond the sea...somewhere waiting for me..."

1. I was going to post an agreement. Then I saw THIS:
BioShock PC - You Only Install Twice

You can only install the game ON TWO COMPUTERS. After that, you're outta luck. In order to get one of your install "credits" back, you need to un-install the game from one of the computers. Then, supposedly, the copy-protection will return you one of you install "credits". If your hard drive crashes, you're pretty much out of luck and you've lost one of your "credits".

I already bought the game, and if I knew this, I wouldn't have done so. I'm sure this is a decision by the publisher, 2K, not the developers of the game, so I can't fault them for making a magnificent game. Get the XBox version and you won't have this issue, of course. But then you're stuck with a control pad for a first-person shooter.

Us PC users are outta luck until someone cracks this issue. It's a pity that the law-abiding users are treated like criminals in this and the pirates can install this software all over the place.

2. So far I had a bit of problems installing the first time with the Key-code confirmation
After I entered it and submitted it about 5 times, no other problems and smooth sailing. It still was a pain in the ass as they had several numeric "0s and 1s" that could have been alphabetic "Is or Os"...Jesus I hate that. I can only hope that the uninstall doesn't provide as may annoyances and it will recognize that I have "returned" one of my installs.

I understand they did this...It's all part of the continually inovative attempts to stem crackers, and I understand to an extent. Halflife 2 tried it...so have a few others. It seems that they inevitably get bypassed anyways and end up being more of a pain for the actual purchasers of the game. Maybe one day they'll find a real solution, until then it's keeping much quality PC gaming in the back drawer of many prime developers who see profits (of course who can blame them!) as a bottom line to what to produce and what platforms to distribute to.

Honestly, the only games that are immune by sheer property of the game itself are MMORPGs...and I really don't like them myself.

None-the-less, DAMN what a game! I just can't wait until some anti-gaming DUer points out that they "made an Ayn Rand game..." despite the fact that it's obviously the ultra libertarian greed that destroyed Rapture. Then again, Benchley's gone...just not the same without his Lieberman ass-sucking posts.

3. You're right...it's not the same without Benchley (snicker)
Now, with Half-Life 2 (I'm an avid player. Just look at my avatar.) I knew what I was getting into when I purchased the game. I accepted it. And I can install it on all my machines; I just can't be logged into Steam at the same time on all of them (which is fine by me.) On the Bioshock box, it just "internet authorization required". Said nothing about this whole "two installs and you're done" crap. If I knew that's what they required when I purchased the game, I wouldn't be as angry. (I'd still be irritated, but I don't like getting blindsided.)

Microsoft spent a billion dollars fighting piracy in the past few years for Windows XP and it didn't work, and I don't see any particularly easy way to fix the piracy problem.

As for the game itself...
...I like setting things on fire. (Insert creepy borderline psychotic laugh here.)

(And I haven't encountered a Big Daddy yet. At least not one that I can try to take out: just saw the first one in that cool scene with the Little Sister.)

And each time I encounter a splicer, I say out loud, "See, Ryan? This is what you get when you have scientists "not bound by petty morality.". When I heard that line in Andrew Ryan's introduction during the descent into the sea, I laughed out loud.

4. My reaction to my line was similar
When he started with the "artists not being bound by censors", I kinda started to think, well OK sounds good...then the scientist line. Just wait till you get the Doctor's tape recordings if you haven't...talk about medical science going mad: "I can do with flesh what Picaso did with paint..." Good voice acting makes it go well with the artsy game.

I'm rather partial to shocking groups of splicers standing in water myself...dancy dancy!

Halflive 2 Episode 2 looks like it's going to be a lot of fun as well! I heard there's going to be a musclecar....

5. Waiting for my copy via USPS
didn't want to make the 30 mile trip to Best Buy or Circuit City. Anyways, there seems to be a bit of a fray over multiple activations of the game. Seems that more than twice and your screwed, regardless of uninstalls, according to this guy:

8/22/07 - DRMShock
By Dan Stapleton, Senior Associate Editor http://www.pcgamer.com/

So we installed on one machine, then uninstalled and installed on another with no problems. So far, so good. I got in about an hour of play time, but I do the majority of my game playing at home, where I've got my heavy-duty gaming rig set up, so I was really looking forward to bringing it home with me. I uninstalled the game from my work machine and happily headed home...but when I got there and went to activate, I was stopped dead by a failure message that informed me I'd installed with this code one time too many. What... the... $%~&!

Ok, still not a disaster. I've had this happen with Windows XP before—all I have to do is call the number in the manual, read off the reactivation request code supplied by the activation wizard, and they'll give me an unlock code. Well, not so simple in this case—the support number for the US listed in the manual didn't work, giving me a "We cannot connect your call at this time" message. So I called the Canadian number, which went through. After four minutes on hold, I was told that the only way they'd unlock it is if I take a photo of the disc and the manual and email it to them. Wow… even Microsoft doesn’t make you do that.

Oh well, I'm looking forward to my two shots at the game!

6. Thanks for the link. I have to agree wtih Stapleton:
"I sincerely doubt that the BioShock copy protection wall will still be standing a week from today."

This has pissed off too many people, and apparently now this "deactivation" doesn't work. According to 2K Games, uninstalling the game is supposed to give you one of your install "credits" back. 2K is going to get rightfully raked over the coals for this one.

9. I will be getting this one soon
I was never fortunate enough to be able to play the first System Shock, but System Shock 2 is one of my all time favorites. I downloaded the demo for BioShock and I must say it was absolutely incredible. If the creepy atmosphere the demo showed us holds up through the rest of the game then I think it will go down as having one of the most moody atmospheres in gaming history. It will probably be a couple weeks before I am able to get the full version, but I can't wait to play it.

wow. the graphic design of this game is astounding, just astounding. I just want to wander around and look at things! I wish I had a HDTV, but I think I'll be bringing this game and the console out to the in-laws for thanksgiving to check it out on HD...

The game is really easy to get into the action, the controls are pretty intuitive and I really like the hacking feature. Can't wait to get back into it tonight while the missus is out canvassing!

not to mention "God Bless the Child" performed by Ella Fitzgerald...the first time you encounter a Little Sister with Big Daddy still kicking.

All done phenomenally well with the visuals of the game.

Just wait...it keep coming!

One thing I noticed is that if the Big Daddy kills you a couple of times, it seems like the Little Sister runs off and disappears...

I really am torn between saving and harvesting the Little Sisters - on the one hand, that Adam is really crucial, but on the other hand, they do seem like they are just modified little girls and not completely inhuman, like Atlas tells you. Just loving the game overall so far.

13. The good doctor who created them will reward you for saving them
Edited on Tue Aug-28-07 08:14 AM by YOY
Every 3 little sisters or so she gives you a gift in the form of a teddy bear with stuff inside by the nearest Gathers' Garden (if you have not killed any.) The gift includes 200 adam as well as some other good stuff! Not as much as if you would have gotten if you killed them, but you won't be in a bad place!

You also (I have heard) get the "good ending" if you save them all or at least kill none. The "bad ending" will occur if you hurt a single one.

Being a father of a little girl I just can't bring myself to hurt them...even though it's just a video game... :dilemma:

14. Rescuer Here.
I've been tempted to harvest the little buggers but just can't bring myself to do it. What an incredible game. I just got done pitting two Big Daddy's against each other. My BD and I defeated another BD, I rescued the Little Sister and went on my way. The BD I had under my influence followed me for a little while longer and in the short-lived quiet I noticed just how beat-to-shit he was. He was burned from head to toe, had steam pumping out of every joint and was wheezing heavily. I actually felt sorry for the guy and was forced to put him out of his misery. What an experience.

33. I had a doctor pull a fast one on me today
My GOD, this AI does some creepy stuff sometimes.

Spoilering for those who haven't played. I'll just white it out.

I was in the area in the medical pavilion where the dentist offices are. I was in one of the dentist offices, checking out the desk over in the corner. I think there's a syringe of Eve on the desk or something, and I was looking at other objects to see if I could score a bit of plunder.

Now, the room was empty and I was listening closely for any sound at all, because I already know the AI sometimes likes to sneak up on you and then let you have it. The thing is, they always make noise. Or so I thought.

I turned around, and literally inches away from me stood a doctor. It was the most bizarre thing, because he honestly was standing right behind me, and even weirder, he didn't do anything until I pulled out a weapon. Then he attacked.

Boo.

I got the impression that if the AI doesn't want to attack you, it won't. Very creepy- it was one of those moments where I actually jumped in my seat because I was so startled, and it's been a long time since a game has made me do that.

Another Bioshock moment. This one made me laugh out loud: I was in the same area, in one of the other offices. This is the office connected by the tunnel covered by the grates ar both ends. There was a nurse on the couch in the far room, and when I broke open the second grate, before I could do anything at all, she crossly exclaimed "WHAT!!" and something else, actually stamped her foot, and then ran off to see if she could find a way to get to me.

Note to AI: you can crouch. I've seen you do it. You just don't seem to when you're chasing me.

42. That was a great scene.
They put a tonic on the cabinet to lure you over there. Then the mist fogs up the entire room and if you listen closely, you can hear the subtle tap tap tap of footsteps on the tile.
Also spoilers:
<--
When you turn to leave, you catch a glimpse of something that wasn't there five seconds ago. Curiosity instinctively turns you to whatever it is, and then...boom.

45. My own personal favorite scene in Bioshock
also happens to be, IMO, the best intro to a boss fight ever.

Dr. Steinman (youtube video, not exactly safe for kids, view at own risk), in the medical pavilion:

What can I do with this one, Aphrodite? She wont! STAY!! STILL!!! All want to do is make them beautiful, but they always TURN OUT WRONG!

That one- too ffffat!
This one- too tall!
This one- too SYMMETRICAL!

And now... What's this, guys? An intruder!

He is ugly! Ugly... UGLY.... UUUUGLYYYYYYYY!!!!!

Look at you! HIDEOUS!

:D I just absolutely love how that was done. It's just perfect in about five different ways... honestly, the voice acting and the work the animators did in that section is worthy of a feature film. Well, the whole game is, to one extent or another, but that scene in particular could have been taken right out of a film like "Saw".

I've never really gotten that impression from a game until now. That little scene was truly a sight to behold, and I hope there are more of them later in the game (I just got to Farmer's Market; I'm wondering what happens when I complete the multipart goal there).

This is just a ridiculously good game across the board. The bad part is- it ends.

31. Get these mods:
Qarl's texture pack III, BTMod (this is pretty much "the" standard mod to have), and a color map mod (there are several of those). There's also another mod that allows you to alter the size and positioning of the HUD, but its name escapes me at the moment (I don't think BTMod does that). All of these should be compatible with each other and your current saved games.

The Qarl's pack (IF you can tolerate waiting for over a GIGABYTE of data to download) retextures damn near the entire game with textures that are, in the opinion of many who have downloaded it, actually better than the original Oblivion textures. I got it, and my eyes popped out of my head all over again!

BTMod makes a lot of interface tweaks to make the UI less like that of a console game and more like that of a PC game. This allows you to, for example, see a much longer list of items in your inventory, gives you the option to show more or less navigational detail on the ingame map, and several other interface tweaks. BTMod is considered by many to be a "must have".

As for other RPGs, the Baldur's Gate series is often referred to as 'definitive'. BG and BG2 will run on damn near anything sold today, too. In fact, even though I just got Bioshock, I'm still playing through BG2 again just for kicks. Those RPGs are enormous, and will take a good long time to finish. Like Oblivion, I can guarantee you you will not find everything there is to find, nor will you do everything there is to do, on the first time through the game.

Neverwinter Nights is pretty good (both NWN and BG are Forgotten Realms games and take place in the D&D universe); while not as long as either BG game, NWN boasts better visuals than either and has an official map editor available.

Stay as far away as you can from "Ruins of Myth Drannor". DON'T buy it; removing it is known to hose hard drives.

Hope all this is a help of some sort...

especially at the U-Invent stations, when you can't really remember what all you have already.

I'd also like the option to review all the plasmids and tonics you have in storage at any one time.

Plus, I installed the update and now the game runs a little funny - freezes up when it didn't before.

28. As for the inventory screen, I have to point at the console development for that one.
There's been a history of "dumbing down" games for consoles, unfortunately. I don't mean they're saying that the games are stupid, but developers have tended to reduce features from games that make it over to consoles.

My best example of this is Interstate '76. Marvelous game, with great gaming physics, a decent story, huge missions on massively sized maps, and intricate detail in your car's physics and parts. If your right front tire was damaged, you felt it in the way the car handled.
Activision wanted to port the game over to the Playstation in 1998, so they tried. But someone decided that Playstation players didn't want a "mission-based game" and just wanted to drive around and shoot each other in an arena. Thus Vigilante 8 was created as a "spin-off" of Interstate '76. No individual damage anymore, no salvage, and practically no story.

And I oughatta put you on "ignore" for even mentioning Daikatana in the same thread as Deus Ex. :P

Seriously, it's hard to even fathom that both games were made in the same building.

I was out of the gaming mode when Daikatana came out so I missed it...Deus Ex when past me too. I remember the stories though...

On an Interstate '76/Vigilante 8 note...how could they make a game without Taurus? That brotha was so bad they shoulda named a car after him.

I'm still disappointed with Oblivion which suffered from portitis. It just felt...wrong...after seeing what a CRPG can do with Baldur's gate. Sure it was pretty, but it felt...like plastic fruit. Decorative and shiny but lacking in nutrition.

I finally got to play Interstate '76 again recently! It's on Gametap and it works!!!!!!!!!

I leave you with some classic prose I found scribbled on the back of a napkin at a truck stop in west Texas

Looking out the window of your room onto a wet rainy day
Main street under a slate gray afternoon sky
The light on your face is soft and dim under the lace curtain
And the streets are empty
In the distance, there is a flash and a rumble
Clouds sail the sky like giant wooden ships

46. I have a complaint or two of my own along these lines.
Some of the following is also true for the inventory screen in the unmodded PC version of Oblivion, to provide yet another example.

The icons on the map are obviously designed with consoles in mind. They're huge, and they make it impossible to see the portions of the map they occlude, some of which contain doorways into other areas. BAD developers, BAD! Small icons, or big ones with lines pointing to the location in the PC version! GRR!

There's no ingame inventory screen in Bioshock (wtf? the game MAKES YOU get items!), but I'm willing to bet money that if there were, it would have the same limitations of the inventory screen in Oblivion: huge choices on the menu, thus displaying only about eight entires onscreen at one time.

However, there is some good news: stashed away in the .ini files for Bioshock are entries that control the behavior of the editor. I'm NOT talking about the image that's been reported found elsewhere that has the "BIOSHOCK EDITOR" title in the corner, no- there are actual editor-specific entries in \bioshock\builds\release\default.ini.

An editor will heal my ills, and make user expansions possible :D

35. YOY (or anyone)- could you help me out a bit, please?
Edited on Tue Sep-18-07 11:49 PM by kgfnally
I'm more than confused. After the first Big Daddy crashes through the window and you get to harvest from the Little Sister (or save her) unchallenged, and then fight the next Big daddy to get to the other little sister, did you find a third bouncer at or near the Dr. Steinman junction? I can't escape because this bastard is hostile on sight, unlike the other Big Daddies and unlike every walkthrough I've read to find my answer to this issue.

I'm out of Eve, health packs, and ammo after beating my first Big Daddy, and this third (if you count the one that flew through the window, already dead) Big Daddy chases me into a flock of Splicers that apparently evaded my nook-and-cranny carnagefest when I went through this area of the map the first time. I get overwhelmed, and I can't even use Enrage because, alas, I've run out of Eve.

Should I just go back to the Dr. Steinman boss fight and begin anew from there? I'm thinking so...

36. Weird. That hasn't happened to me.
So this happens after you defeat Steinman? and he's still hostile after you get out of the vita-chamber? Usually they calm down after they kill you.

Might be a glitch. As far as I know, the only BD that attacks you without provocation occurs much later in the game.

38. after Steinman, and after the first Big Daddy fight, yes
I decided to just go back to before I ever even see a BD and try again. Maybe it was a glitch...

37. I've yet to see a third one.
Sorry, you may have a glitch. Try reloading and let us know what happens.

39. Well, here's a screenshot:

I used GIMP to illustrate the location and the Daddies. Yes, it happened again. Twice in a row. The arrow in the foreground pointing toward the Daddy corpse is the one I killed; the circle is around the "new" Daddy, who happens to now be guarding the Sister the first one was before it died.

Each time this has happened, I died during the fight and went to a Vita-Chamber, and each time another BD appeared after I'd killed the first one and (in the first case) harvested from the Sister.

THIS time, I killed the BD and a Splicer sneaked up on me from behind while I was looting his corpse. I had next to no health and no health packs, and one *whap* of a wrench was enough to send me into a chamber. I came out, and saw that scene, above: somehow, the Sister "found" another BD (in an area where there aren't supposed to be any more).

So, I saw the one fly through the window, and harvested from that undefended Sister (number one), and then killed a BD, tried to loot him, and died, searched for the Sister, and found... another BD.

Something is going on in the game logic here, I don't know what it is, but it's almost as if the game is saying, "Oh! You beat the BD and died promptly thereafter, so surprise! Here's another BD!"

I can't deal with it and survive. I haven't enough Eve or ammo left to make it past him, through the suddenly-present Splicers, and to the Neptune entrance. I think I might have to go into god mode just to surmount this glitch. And I hate cheating on my first run through, especially in a great game like this one.

:wtf:

edit: I just saved and did a sort of experiment with the BD guarding her; it seems you can get "close" to them- that is, the BD simply shoves you back without attacking- up to two times before the BD turns hostile at the Sister's urging.

I'm off to bind the god command. Dammit.

40. That's the first time I've ever seen it.
Truly weird. So the BD attached on to the little sister the moment you killed the first?

I mean, when I kill a BD the sister is RIGHT THERE. Crying over the corpse of "Mister Bubbles" ("Get up Mr. Bubbles! PLEEEEASE!") I've never had to search for her. When they start pounding on you the sisters jump on the back of BD and "ride" him.

Truly weird.

41. I ended up killing FOUR of them at that one spot
I think there's a bug that occurs when you kill a BD and are then yourself immediately killed. I did figure out that the cheats are toggles, though, and that there- curiously enough- doesn't seem to be an ingame console. You just bind the cheats to a key in an .ini file. OTOH, by going on the hunt for the cheats, I also learned something else, completely by accident.

It's possible for PC gamers to extract the music and sound from the game.

If you go here and scroll to the end of the article (before the comments start), you'll find instructions and download links for the file to extract the music, and also for the file used to convert them to something playable. I'll just copy/paste that portion of the page here to save people some time...

Here’s how I extracted the files.
1) Download EkszBox-ABX v1.6 here
2) Download Music Player EX here
3) Unpack EkszBox-ABX v1.6 and then run the program.
4) Open the file (from within the EkszBox program) “streams_music_common_audio.fsb” in your Content/Sounds_Windows directory.
5) Extract the files. (the files you extracted will be in a folder named “streams_music_common_audio” in your Content/Sounds_Windows directory)
6) Unpack the Music Player EX and run the program
7) Open your extracted files (Drag and drop the files into the program.
8 ) Highlight all of the files and right click and select convert.

This works with all of the .fsb files, but some of them don't do anything when you try to extract/play them. Maybe they're empty data files...?

One commenter on that forum page I linked to has this to say:

When I heard that the licensed songs were in the game directory I went about trying to get them with my usual tools for converting audio files and had nothing but trouble. I ended up following the recipe above, and having to do a manual install of the JRE listed because the one I had wouldn’t run the applet despite being the right version. In the end … it was worth it!

According to members of other gaming forums, this is the list of the actual music track titles in the game:

# Nutcracker (Waltz of the Flowers) - Peter Illyich Tchaikovsky
# The Party’s Over - Noel Coward
# Please Be Kind - Frank Sinatra
# Beyond the Sea - Bobby Darin
# Liza - Django Reinhardt
# Papa Loves Mambo - Perry Como
# Jitterbug Waltz - Fats Waller
# Night and Day - Billie Holiday
# It Had to Be You - (Priscilla Lane, Danny Thomas, or Dolley Wilson?)
# The Best Things in Life are Free - The Inkspots
# Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams - Bing Crosby
# Oh Danny Boy - Mario Lanza
# You’re the Top - Cole Porter
# It’s Bad For Me - Rosemary Clooney
# 20th Century Blues - Noel Coward
# How Much Is That Doggie In The Window - Patti Page
# Just Walking In The Rain - Johnnie Ray
# World Weary - Noel Coward

51. Just a bump because I'm now hooked to this game.
I got it for the Xbox for the holidays, and while I'm not a huge FPS fan, I just can't put it down.

It's creepy and beautiful and intense and fun. Highly recommended.
