I'm downloading LofRO as I type.
I play WoW, but I've decided to try Lord of the Rings Online. Has anyone played both? Which one did you like better? While we're at it, what other MMORPGs do you like?

Warcraft was my first MMO, and I could possibly be ready to expand.

1. I'll be interested to know how you like...
...Lord of the Rings after World of Warcraft. :) I purchased and tried to play Guild Wars; however, even with computer glasses, I have great difficulty reading what the characters are saying. Thus, it is very difficult for me to figure out what I'm supposed to be doing in that game. I was disappointed, too, after World of Warcraft, in the graphics.

2. Well, I'm only playing the trial version so far
and I decided to play a hunter since I have a hunter on Wow. For comparison purposes. :D However, there seem to be equivalent classes for most of the classes in WoW. The biggest difference is that there is only one healer class in Lord of the Rings, and even then his primary purpose is, I think, casting buffs on his party rather than healing. I only say that because healing seemed like an afterthought in the description of the class.

It plays almost exactly like WoW. It seems that the primary method of leveling is to complete quests like in WoW. You gain experience for kills and quests in the same way. I think Lord of the Rings requires you to pay more attention to the storyline to know how to complete quests. In Wow, I just say, "okay, I need to kill 10 Felguards in Legion Hold," but I pay no attention to why. The game play also heavily relies on your skill since they don't allow addons or macros. This could be good in a lot of ways, but I really enjoy Lightheaded. :P

The graphics seem to be a bit better than WoW's, though still "cartoony". I suppose we just haven't surpassed that point in technology? Though I see more realistic computer generated graphics in movies.

I'm only level five, so I've yet to experience 99% of the content, but I like it so far. Though I'm not sure that I'm ready to pay a monthly fee to play.

3. Thanks for the synopsis.
Like you, I really pay very little attention to the story line in World of Warcraft, except when I have to do so. It is all about leveling and supporting myself (those drinking materials don't get any cheaper). :)

I do like the idea of no add ons as that may "level" the playing field so to speak. I personally don't use macros on World of Warcraft and thus wouldn't miss that at all. The cartoonishness on WOW doesn't bother me as much as it did in Guild Wars, which is really distracting for me, the jerky character movements.

Please keep us informed. I'm always looking for "something else to do." :)

4. I'm currently playing Lotro, what server are you on?
Edited on Thu Feb-28-08 08:37 AM by Lirwin2
I'm on Vilya, you should come to this server so we can play together. Another AMAZING mmo is FFXI (final fantasy XI online). I played that game for about 2 years.

6. LOTR is cool for 3 days... then you will be done..
It is very shallow. I also find WOW shallow...

The quests are a bore, the land is great looking... let us know...

7. LoTRO is FAR FAR better than WoW
The best part of lotro is the community, far less kids with their pvp epeen. It is a cooperative game, as mmorpgs should be. Beyond the community is all the things that the developers have done to take mmorpgs to the next level. The graphics are beautiful. If you have directx 10 they are photorealistic in many areas. Turbine is constantly adding new areas (for free) to the game, since launch there has been 30% land mass added. The game is story driven with the epic quest series, things will happen that change areas. The stories are good stories worthy of being in a Token environment. Everything is consistent with lore. End game is not all about equipment, it is more trait based although equipment does matter. Crafting is more advanced than in WoW and you can craft some of the best equipment in the game. I got to 50 without grinding once, although you might need to go grinding a small amount to earn traits. All the instances are HUGE. Lotro is the best mmorpg out there now.

To me BC ruined WoW, it changed it into a grindfest with a pvp focus. All sense of lore, story, and adventure were gone. Now it is filled mostly by high school crowd getting out their teen angst with pvp. It is all about competitiveness and not about cooperation.
