Fallout 3: A buy or a rent?
I've never been a big fan of survival horror type games but I might make an exception for this game being that I've heard nothing but good things about it. So is it worth the worth the whole $60?

1. It's not "survival horror"...if it's MUST be in a genre make it a shooter/RPG.
And it's a buy.

6. My mistake.........
I thought it was because of the screenshots I had seen made it look like a some kind of survival horror.

22. There are definitely some scary parts in it
I played the shit right out of Fallout one and two, especially two, so when this came out I was extremely excited, but also a little worried that they might have dicked it up. It is different than the older ones, but I also have played a lot of Morrowind and more recently a good amount of Oblivion, so I was familiar with the engine and liked it already.

I wasn't disappointed, it is a definite buy.

3. BUY BUY BUY!!! or not.
it isn't even close to survival horror. Well, there are some freaky places in it, but thats not the type of game that it is. YOu could spend over 100 hours exploring and still not see everything. Heck, I spent 125 hours playing and I saw less than half of the places on the map.

Don't rush through the main story because thats not where the fun is, heck that wasn't where the fun was in 1 or 2 either. The fun is in exploring and changing the game world to suit your perceptions. If you don't like the residents of one city, wipe them off the map. You can be as benevolent or evil as you so choose. Only your own imagination will limit the possibilities.

But you can rent it if you want, shoot a couple random mutants or raiders and put the game aside like my brother-in-law did. I must say I am not a fan of the x-box 360 interface for the game, PC was so much better. You can rush through the story in 10-15 hours, but whats the point? The game isn't in the story and rushing through will leave you unsatisfied.

So, do whatever you want, buy it, don't buy it. It really doesn't matter much to me if you do either. In the end, I own it and I'm glad I own it. My ability to enjoy it and re-play it as many times as I want to is not reliant upon your ability to play it or even enjoy it.

Do with it as you will.

5. Just started it on the PC, and so far it's great.
I'm just wandering around checking shit out mostly. There's a story, but I'll get to it when I'm ready.

This isn't survival/horror like the Resident Evil games, so keep that in mind. The first 2 in the series were pure RPGs, and this one mixes in some FPS elements. So far I think the game is worth the money I plunked down for it.

and so far so good, I escaped the vault but before I did I made sure to pop the overseer in the head a few times

When I escaped the vault I had no idea what to do because the world is HUGH guys I'm SERIES! so I went to the nearest town, "Megaton" (sp) and I'm there right now trying to figure out what to do next and trying to get some cash to buy new weapons. I have picked up a few quests thus far, one where I can actually detonate the bomb in the town and get paid a lot of caps for it. Which I might do because I need the money but I'm trying to be a good guy so I don't think I will :dilemma:.

Anyways I'm really starting to like the game, the gameplay reminds me of Oblivion. Although I only have it until Saturday which I don't think will be enough time to even scratch the surface of the game.

But since a few here have beaten the game already can anyone give me some good tips on how to get some good weapons and money?

10. Some advice for you.
Edited on Wed Apr-22-09 07:30 AM by BulletproofLandshark
Get your lockpick and repair skills up as soon as possible. With a higher repair skill you won't have to depend on NPCs to fix your stuff and any custom weapons you make will have a higher starting condition. With the lockpick skill maxed out, you can access much of the high-level weapons and armor locked in Very Hard-locked boxes that you would normally have to progress far into the game to get. Also, having a high lockpick skill can make it a lot quicker to get through buildings.

If you're going to make it your mission to collect the 20 Bobbleheads, don't max out any of your skills or SPECIAL attributes. The Bobbleheads raise your SPECIAL stats by 1, and your skills by 10, so maxing out a stat would negate the effect of getting the Bobblehead.

Try to locate Fort Independence (to the south-southwest of Megaton). There are people there who will exchange any scrap metal and advanced technology you find for your choice of Frag Grenades,.556 ammo, Stimpaks, and RadAway.

Also check the Fallout wiki. It's got info on anything about the game you could possibly want to know.

And yes, definitely buy this game. You can surely get it for less than $60 now too.

11. I just got the collector's edition of it for under $50.
Last one in the store, so I was more than happy to snag it up. Haven't had a chance to do much in the game yet, I'm just wandering around checking things out. I really like the fact that they made some big changes to style of the game without losing what made the first 2 so good.

12. I only traded one laser pistol to them in my entire game
The Brotherhood Outcasts were always so nasty, so I established a KOS policy towards them. Best part about it was, no matter how many outcasts I killed in the field, the three at Ft Independence were none the wiser.

13. Thanks for the tips......
I can't put this game down, I decided I will buy it for the 360. Although I heard the PC version is better but I'm more used to the 360 version. I absolutely love the V.A.T.S it never gets old, I'm trying to increase my agility so I can get more than 3 shots with it though.

I'll be sure to up my repair and lockpicking, they are pretty low right now. That website it awesome, I stumbled upon it yesterday when I was stuck on a quest, but thanks for the link anyway. :)

14. The 360 version is probably the way to go on consoles.
I got the 360 version from GameFly and played for about a month straight before I mailed it back. Then a few weeks ago, a guy at work had it for PS3 and decided he didn't like it, so I traded away Call Of Duty 4 to get it. And I'm on my second playthrough on that version. I wish i had bought it for 360 though, due to the DLC. There's an expansion called "The Pitt" that takes you to Pittsburgh. Also, the upcoming "Broken Steel" expansion raises the level cap to 30, adds new enemies and perks, adds a new quest line, removes the original endings, and allows you to continue playing after the prior ending to the game. Unfortunately, MS struck a deal with Bethesda to make the DLC 360 and PC exclusive. I guess they don't want my money too badly. IMO, exclusive content on multiplatform games is the ugliest thing to come out of this generation of games.

15. Yea the DLC's look sweet.......
Are they free to download though? or do you have to pay like $10 or so? I have a loooooooong ways to go before I get to check out the new content though lol. Who knows maybe sometime in the future they will re-release it with all the new content on it, kinda like Shivering isles for Oblivion.

16. Both of the current packs are 800 MS Points ($10).
Operation Anchorage (forgot about that one) and The Pitt are both $10, and I think Broken Steel will be as well. Microsoft paid part of the development costs of the DLC, so I doubt there will be any "Game Of The Year" edition or anything like that available for PS3.

17. Fallout 3 is just badass, even my wife loves that game and she does not like shooters.
Buy, unless you are buying for a PS3, then wait to buy. The Game of the Year edition is coming out which will have more content.

18. If you're playing it on the PC, definitely buy it without hesitation.
The one-word reason is "mods". On the PC, you get infinite replayability due to the user mods. I try to buy every game I know has that capability, because even years later, you can install it, go online, and find things to do with it that you've never played with before.

Hell, with some current games (like Unreal Tournament 3), the engine and tools are so good that they're used to create whole other games, like The Last Remnant and Bioshock.

21. Easily a buy.
Counting time spent on three different characters, I've got over 300 hours in it and I'm still not done with everything.
