New ‘Slim’ PS3, Priced at $299, to Arrive in September (120GB)
By Stephen Williams

That’s the name of Sony’s newest entry in its PlayStation3 lineup, a compact version of the gaming/Blu-ray console that will have a list price of $299 in the United States, making it a more formidable competitor with the $250 Wii from Nintendo and the $299 Xbox 360 from Microsoft.

It will be introduced worldwide during the first week of September. Slim’s formal coming-out was announced today by Kaz Hirai of Sony at Gamescom, Europe’s major interactive entertainment trade fair in Cologne, Germany. This week, Kmart and Sears began taking preorders in the United States.

The Kmart site describes the new PS3 as having a 120GB hard drive and DualShock 3 controller. The current PS3 model, with an 80-gigabyte drive, is$399; that price is expected to drop imminently.

Mr. Hirai said the PS3 Slim is 30 percent lighter, 32 percent smaller and uses 34 percent less power than the current console.

1. My coworker just got a PS3 this weekend.
I told him over and over that the price was about to fall, but he just HAD to play Madden this week. Dumbass.

4. I bought my 60GB the DAY before the price dropped 100e
however.. that said it was a good deal anyway.
I got to choose the two games I wanted (not a great selection but...) which is good because I didn't like the ones offered.
AND... it's a 60GB.

The new units the next day that were available were the re-vamped 40 and 80GB, which are missing a TON of features.

the most important to me was the ability to play PS2 games.

Anyway it works great, I'm still using the original 60GB drive and even have a 10GB partition so that I can run PSubuntu - something the newer unit won't do.

That said it might be nice to get the newer one for more casual uses like watching movies, etc. I can use my older one for the heavy lifting if needed :) But save a ton on power. I wonder how well the new unit will work with streaming content... I suppose it's all basically the same hardware except for a faster processor.

I'm intrigued, but since I have one (and a wii>.<) it's all academic for me at this point.

5. Glad I waited.
Slimmed down, it doesn't look so much like a George Foreman grill.

I'll have to pull the trigger on one when Gran Turismo 5 comes out. :woohoo:

6. Awesome.....
I only have a Xbox 360, so this is really good news, just the price drop I've been waiting for.
