Since World War II has now been beaten so into the ground that even Medal of Honor is doing a modern war for it's newest game and really World War I wouldn't work. You would die a thousand times trying to take the next trench, etc...
How about Korea-Vietnam? You start off as a new recruit in Korea pushing north in the first campaign, then you're caught up in the Chinese invasion which leads to you fighting in large scale massive battles against the Chinese. After that campaign, you're pulled off the line and we flash forward to Vietnam where you're still the same character, but now a seasoned vet on a team of Green Barrets acting as advisors in the late 50s - very early 60s. The rest of the game you take part in special ops in North Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.
The Korean campaigns certianly lend themselves to be great multiplayer maps with teams portraying the Chinese, Koreans, and Americans.
