Anyone living with brain injuries?

I have scarring from an illness which caused seizures (and I still get them).

Also having http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonverbal_learning_disorder">NLD sucks like hell.

1. The social and sensory symptoms of NLD

Seem to align somewhat with symptoms along the autistic spectrum. You may find some folks in that area who can commiserate.

2. Milder brain injury.

I was in an accident 7 years ago next month that resulted in a skull fracture, a severe frontal lobe concussion, damage to the olfactory nerves (as well as some nerve damage in neck/spine,) and loss of memory.

Before the accident, I had a laser-like memory for anything I'd seen, heard, or read my entire life. After, I had to relearn vocabulary, reread books I knew I'd read several times before, and, not unexpected, I never regained any memory of the accident itself.

My oldest son described it well; he said it was like having my filing cabinet all dumped on the floor with the fan on. It was all there, but harder to find.

7 years on, the neck/spine issues are healed, the olfactory nerves still don't work...I haven't smelled ANYTHING in 7 years. Sometimes I get a tiny hint of a possible smell on the breeze; I can almost TASTE the smell in the back of my throat. I'm never sure if it's the nose/throat connection that gives me a "taste" of a scent, or if it's a "phantom scent" just like the "phantom limb" phenomenon for someone who's lost a limb.

While my memory functions well enough to be considered "average" for my age, it has never regained it's laser-like precision. I often struggle with remembering a word, a phrase, etc., knowing that it's "there," but not quite able to reach it. I think my brain has created new pathways to stored information, but they aren't as direct as before.

4. That sucks that you can't smell

I'm a middle school teacher, and I end the day with 30 8th graders in a small room. It can be a benefit then. ;)

While I can't smell, I am still affected when I breathe things in. I can be affected positively; aroma therapy still works, for example, even when I can't smell it.

I can be affected negatively, as well. A few years ago, I went in to clean out an old stall at a ranch; the stall hadn't been used for several years, and it had been taken over by pigeons. I was cleaning out pigeon crap, etc., getting it ready to be put back into use.

I went in to clean it out on a hot day; high 90s. After 15 minutes, I was outside, gasping and puking. I never smelled a thing. I went back in with a dust mask, and was able to finish the job.

7. Post Concussion syndrome w GulfWar Veterans Illness

during my deployment I took a fall. A building had blow up in frount of me.
I was Consciousnes for only five minutes. I did my best to shake it off.
The next 12 hours in a fog and headahe. This started short Term Memory problems.
Years later I was dignoseted with Attendion Defict Disorder.
Which is a joke because I had no problems completing 4 yrs of college.

I greived for my old self and learn to like your new self with deficts.
SHIP a massachusetts program taught me to use electonic reminder deivice and
pretend you can fuction - your skills will inprove.

6. Newbie with no clue

I have been studying DU for hours looking for a place I

8. My wife has Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus and has been dealing with this since

the winter of 2007. A shunt was put in May of 2008. Mornings are best, she is napping now. Five hours a day is about her limit of strong thinking and then as she calls it, she shuts down. I don't work anymore and take care of her full time.
