Politics for your kids - curriculum and participation
Welcome to YLI! We are a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization based at the University of Virginia Center for Politics.

YLI develops free K-12 civic education resources designed to encourage student interest and participation in the American political process.

Through this website, students may participate in mock elections, a mock congress and campaign simulations, and teachers may download civics and government lesson plans.

e-Congress is a simulation of the law-making process in the United States Congress. Over the course of this simulation, you will take on the role of a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives, one of the two houses of Congress. You and your classmates have five phases to complete in e-Congress 2006.

You are now beginning Phase I. During this phase you will learn more about the structure of Congress, the job of a Member of Congress, and the process of making laws. In later phases, you will conduct research on an issue that interests you, write a bill to submit to e-Congress, and review and vote on bills from other e-Congress students around the country.

"All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives" - U.S. Constitution, Article 1, Section 1 .

2. My son said
he wanted to sign up for the "e-congress" program. I'm thinking about it - it's probably a pretty big time investment - and he's interested in so many different things. Not enough hours in the day sometimes!

I'm also wondering if anyone in our area wants to get a small group together to do it. . . (you know how much they need that "socialization". :grouphug: )

Now, how am I going to possibly fit it into our schedule? ai yi yi - another thing to have to "go to". When would we ever "do school"?

3. I just got my password...
and went looking for elementary level lessons. The one about the flag is pretty interesting, except that they include "under God" in the pledge without explaining that this was a CHANGE from the original :grr:

They also mention that students should remember Raygun's funeral, and the draping of the flag over the casket. It's good that we'll have some young Dems in the group to help set them straight... ;-)
