1. Luise Rainer turned ninety-nine yesterday.

I saw that a number of her films are being screened Monday, and I've always liked her work. Looked
her up on IMDb, and was surprised to find that she's still with us - ninety-nine on 12th January.
Won back to back Oscars, 1937 and 1938.

I liked "The Emperor's Candlesticks" (although the book was better), and of course "The Good Earth"
(although it seems a little strange today to see Caucasian actors playing Chinese, but back then
political correctness didn't exist). She was one of the few people worth watching in the truly
dreadful "The Great Waltz" - I'm probably in a minority here, but I could never stand the voice of
Miliza Korjus, and Fernand Gravet was totally wooden. But the music of Strauss and the acting of
Luise Rainer in what could have been an over-syrupy role made it worthwhile.
