1. Set the DVD Recorder for 12.35 a.m.

Anyone who's never seen Buster Keaton in "The Cameraman", please give
yourself a treat and record it.

This was his first film for MGM, produced by Irving Thalberg, and before
MGM effectively ruined his career by over-writing and over-producing
his films until nothing was left of the heart of Buster Keaton.

The dreams of a small-time cameraman to capture a big news story and also
to win the heart of his dream-girl are sweet, sad, and very funny. Of
the many well-known comic scenes, my personal favourite is the scene on
the bus, where Buster is forced upstairs while his girlfriend is sitting
downstairs. His attempts to move down to her are hilarious, yet he
never crosses the line to the point of being ridiculous - there is always
a reason for everything he does - so he can tease out a situation for
maximum humour, but always knows just when to stop.

If you've never seen Buster Keaton, this is a perfect introduction.

2. I saw that as a university student.

The Cameraman showed at the student union, and for all that I already loved Buster Keaton, that particular movie made a great impression. There are some amazing sequences in it. My favorite is the bit at the public swimming pool...

But this being a Keaton film, there's also poignancy.
