1. I still think Daniel Day-Lewis' performance in 'My Left Foot'

is unmatched in his repertoire to date. And that's saying something, because he has SO many amazing performances! I loved him in 'The Age of Innocence' and 'There Will Be Blood'; two VERY different roles. He's always a surprise, and I always look forward to seeing him!

2. He is amazing.

I actually went to see The Gangs of New York, for various reasons, but a big one was Day-Lewis's performance as Bill the Butcher. It was terrifying and riveting and like nothing else I've ever seen.

3. on his PR tour for 'There Will Be Blood'

he was giving an interview, and sharing how he liked to go way, way, way out in left field, and do something altogether different from acting between roles. Before this particular film, he had studied under a shoe-maker, and had learned that craft, and was doing it for about 2 years before this movie came out. Who would think of Daniel Day-Lewis as a cobbler? Obviously, the guy is enormously gifted and a bit eccentric to boot!

I also love that his wife is much older than he is, and they've been together for many years. Seems like he appreciates experience!!

4. Regarding his wife's age...

According to Wikipedia (and they may be wrong) Day-Lewis was born in 1957; his wife (Rebecca Miller, daughter of the late Arthur Miller) was born in 1962.

5. On Christy Brown...

Many years ago (way back when I was very young), a friend lent me a manuscript copy of Christy Brown's poetry,
"Come Softly To My Wake". How he got hold of it, I have no idea, but I read it and was enthralled by poems that
I barely understood, and I later managed to find a copy of his novel "Down All The Days". The kind of life he
presented (it had to be semi-autobiographical) was totally removed from my reality, but there was a kind of defiance
in him that demanded respect - a strange mixture of black humour, maudlin sentimentality, and rough beauty that
was at once depressing and uplifting. This was long before the release of either the book or the film "My Left
Foot".

For anyone who enjoys poetry, or is interested in more of Christy Brown, try to get hold of some of his works. It's
rather a shame that somehow the story of his life has overshadowed his own work, because it's well worth exploring.
It's just a pity that he gave up writing and turned to painting, so he didn't leave much, but what he did write is
worth searching for.
