1. One word - Blackmail.

I saw this film at the Sydney Silent Film Festival two years ago, and really enjoyed it.

For sure, it was a little heavy-handed compared to Hitch's later style, but the seeds of his greatness were already
there. It was a much more complex film, psychologically speaking, than the run-of-the-mill thrillers of that or
even of later times. I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it, but there is the "typical" Hitchcock ending
that is full of ambiguity; no neat endings with every question answered.

It was the first British "talkie" film made - it began as a silent, but part way through, Hitch was ordered to make
it a talkie. That posed a problem, as the leading lady, Anny Ondra, had a thick Czech accent, and her voice was
dubbed by having her mime her lines in English while another actress spoke them off-camera.

Anny Ondra was typical in one regard though - the beautiful cool blonde leading lady that we associate with
Hitchcock. There is also a sighting of Hitch himself, as a passenger on a train (or a bus, I forget which, but he's
there).

If you're a Hitchcock fan, or interested in very early film, do watch it. You won't be sorry.
