TCM Schedule for Wednesday, April 21st: TCM Prime Time Feature: Fun with Split Screen

Okay, Matilda, I need to know: Have you seen The Chocolate Soldier? I think I heard the recording once when I was in high school or middle school, but I don't recall ever seeing the movie.

In other news, one of my recently discovered favorites, Westward the Women, is airing today. From what I recall, TCM didn't air it until it had a special guest programmer, selected from among TCM viewers, choose it as part of his film line-up. I've been hooked on it ever since.

1. I remember watching Westward The Women
with my dad (the serious Western fan) when I was a kid. I was so impressed at the hard work (and "man's" work) that these women had to do to make it to the west, to those unknown husbands. It was a very different view of women's history than what was taught in public junior high and high school in the 1960s and 1970s.

2. Indeed I have seen The Chocolate Soldier, and have it on VHS.

It's very well worth a look; more for the quality of the singing than
the actual story, which is really silly (a wife wouldn't recognise her
husband because he puts on a beard for disguise - I ask you!).

But Nelson sings some wonderful songs, including The Song of the Flea
in a bass-baritone, and the wonderful "O Star of Eve" from Tannhauser.
And I do think that his voice blends beautifully with that of Rise
Stevens (although she's not as pretty as Jeanette MacDonald). But the
baritone and the mezzo - a good match.

Can't resist adding a link to a musical medley from the film:
