I understand there's more than one version of Lang's film around. I wonder which one TCM is using?

"Alternate Version for M (1931)
The film shown at the premiere (11 May 1931, 110 minutes) had an alternate ending: it shows the full trial of the murderer. This ending was later replaced by a woman saying "Man mu? halt besser uffpassen uff de Kleenen!" (We all have to watch our children).
A new, fully restored version was premiered at the Cambridge Film Festival in July 2003. This version features a restored soundtracks, with Lang's originally intended long periods of silence, and the properly restored frame size. The film was previously altered with ambient noise on the soundtrack, and the frame drastically cropped around all four edges.
Rereleased in 1997 in the US on video; this version features the original ending, and new, computerized subtitiles -- beware of older versions with poorly translated, illegible subtitles!!! "

3. Metropolis Restored.

I received an email from Amazon this week announcing preordering for the new version of "Metropolis". The newest version combines existing footage from the Kino 2002 version (which was very well done, but had a number of scenes missing), plus other footage from an old print discovered in New Zealand in 2005, and another found in Buenos Aires in 2008. The New Zealand version had been edited differently to other versions, and not only were some missing scenes found, but the restoration team were able to replace poor quality scenes from the Argentinian version with the better quality scenes from the New Zealand print.

The original U.S. release had been trimmed to 90 minutes, which explains why so much footage was lost. There are still a few missing scenes which are described with the use of printed titles, but this new print is the most complete version to date, with a running time of 145 minutes (the 2002 version was 124 minutes, so that's quite
a lot of added time).

I love this film - there are many layers to it, and of course Lang's machines are quite amazing for the time. And it has the beautiful Brigitte Helm as Maria, quite unforgettable. I'm so looking forward to seeing this newest version.
