Cobb, Rod Steiger, Pat Henning, Eva Marie Saint, Leif Erickson, Tony Galento, John Hamilton, Nehemiah Persoff. Budd Schulberg's unflinching account of N.Y.C. harbor unions (suggested by articles by Malcolm Johnson), with Brando unforgettable as misfit, Steiger his crafty brother, Cobb his waterfront boss, and Saint the girl he loves. That classic scene in the back of a taxicab is just as moving as ever. Winner of eight Oscars: Best Picture, Director, Actor (Brando), Supporting Actress (Saint), Story & Screenplay, Cinematography (Boris Kaufman), Art Direction-Set Decoration (Richard Day), and Editing (Gene Milford). Leonard Bernstein's music is another major asset. Film debuts of Saint, Martin Balsam, Fred Gwynne, and Pat Hingle. Stevens, Porter Hall, Adam Williams, Edward Binns, Lee Van Cleef. So-so melodrama involving L.A. police captain Robinson and events surrounding a cop killing and planned bank robbery. 7:30 AM drama Dramatic School (1938) 80 min TV-G drama Dramatic School (1938) A young actress struggles to make a hit on stage and in married life. Dir: Robert B. Sinclair Cast: Luise Rainer, Paulette Goddard, Alan Marshall. 80 min, TV-G CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Robert B. Sinclair. Luise Rainer, Paulette Goddard, Alan Marshal, Lana Turner, Genevieve Tobin, Anthony Allan (John Hubbard), Henry Stephenson, Gale Sondergaard, Melville Cooper, Erik Rhodes, Virginia Grey, Ann Rutherford, Hans Conried, Margaret Dumont, Dick Haymes. Fascinating cast toplines this so-so drama with Rainer the center of attraction as a fanciful wannabe actress. 9:00 AM drama Paris Model (1953) 80 min TV-G drama Paris Model (1953) A dress plays a key role in the lives of each of the women who wear it. Dir: Alfred E. Green Cast: Marilyn Maxwell, Paulette Goddard, Eva Gabor. 80 min, TV-G CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Alfred E. Green. Eva Gabor, Tom Conway, Paulette Goddard, Marilyn Maxwell, Cecil Kellaway, Barbara Lawrence, Florence Bates. Lackluster vehicle for veteran actors, revolving around a dress and four women who purchase copies of same. 10:30 AM comedy Nothing But the Truth (1941) 90 min TV-G comedy Nothing But the Truth (1941) A businessman bets he can tell the truth for 24 hours. Dir: Elliott Nugent Cast: Bob Hope, Paulette Goddard, Edward Arnold. 90 min, TV-G CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Elliott Nugent. Bob Hope, Paulette Goddard, Edward Arnold, Leif Erickson, Helen Vinson, Willie Best. Entertaining comedy based on sure-fire idea: Bashful stockbroker Hope wagers that he can tell the absolute truth for 24 hours. Good fun. Filmed before in 1920 (with Taylor Holmes) and 1929 (with Richard Dix); also an ancestor of Jim Carrey's LIAR LIAR. 12:05 PM short On The Road To Monterrey (1943) C-9 min, CLOSE 12:15 PM comedy Crystal Ball, The (1943) 81 min TV-G comedy Crystal Ball, The (1943) A female fortuneteller uses her "powers" to land a man. Dir: Elliott Nugent Cast: Ray Milland, Paulette Goddard, Gladys George. 81 min, TV-G CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Elliott Nugent. Paulette Goddard, Ray Milland, Virginia Field, Gladys George, William Bendix, Ernest Truex. Weak comedy of beauty-contest loser who becomes fortune-teller; good players left stranded by stale material. 1:45 PM comedy On Our Merry Way (1948) 98 min TV-G comedy On Our Merry Way (1948) An aspiring reporter interviews people about the child that changed their lives. Dir: King Vidor Cast: Paulette Goddard, Burgess Meredith, James Stewart. 98 min, TV-G CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: King Vidor, Leslie Fenton. Burgess Meredith, Paulette Goddard, Henry Fonda, James Stewart, Fred MacMurray, William Demarest, Dorothy Lamour, Victor Moore, Harry James, Eduardo Ciannelli, Dorothy Ford, Hugh Herbert. Silly multi-episode comedy, with a buoyant Meredith posing as an inquiring reporter and asking people what impact a baby has had on their life. Strained slapstick throughout. Protracted sequence, with Stewart and Fonda as laconic musician pals, was written by John O'Hara. Aka A MIRACLE CAN HAPPEN. 3:30 PM adventure Charge of the Lancers (1953) C-74 min TV-G adventure Charge of the Lancers (1953) A soldier masquerades as a gypsy to rescue his best friend from the enemy. Dir: William Castle Cast: Paulette Goddard, Jean Pierre Aumont, Richard Stapley. C-74 min, TV-G CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: William Castle. Paulette Goddard, Jean- Pierre Aumont, Richard Stapley, Karin Booth, Charles Irwin. Stilted affair of gypsy Goddard and British officer Aumont finding romance in midst of Crimean War. 4:45 PM musical Second Chorus (1940) 84 min TV-G musical Second Chorus (1940) Two composers vie for their lady manager's heart as they head for Broadway. Dir: H. C. Potter Cast: Fred Astaire, Paulette Goddard, Artie Shaw. 84 min, TV-G , CC CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: H. C. Potter. Fred Astaire, Paulette Goddard, Artie Shaw and his Orchestra, Charles Butterworth, Burgess Meredith. Routine musical comedy with Astaire and Meredith as musicians who want to join Shaw's band; they both have designs on Goddard. Not enough music and hardly any dancing, but what's there is fun. Fred and Paulette dance to "(I Ain't Hep to That Step but I'll) Dig It.'' 6:19 PM short Day Of Rest, The (1939) 9 min, CLOSE 6:30 silent Modern Times (1936) 87 min TV-G silent Modern Times (1936) The Little Tramp tries to build a home with a young slum girl. Dir: Charlie Chaplin Cast: Charlie Chaplin, Paulette Goddard, Henry Bergman. 87 min, TV-G CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Charlie Chaplin. Charlie Chaplin, Paulette Goddard, Henry Bergman, Chester Conklin, Stanley "Tiny'' Sandford. Charlie attacks the machine age in inimitable fashion, with sharp pokes at other social ills and the struggle of modern-day survival. Goddard is the gamin who becomes his partner in life. Chaplin's last silent film (with his own music--including "Smile''--sound effects and gibberish song) is consistently hilarious, and unforgettable. Final shot is among Chaplin's most famous and most poignant. One of Goddard's sisters early on is young Gloria DeHaven (daughter of Chaplin's assistant director). TCM PRIMETIME - WHAT'S ON TONIGHT: SUMMER UNDER THE STARS: PAULETTE GODDARD 8:00 comedy Great Dictator, The (1940) 125 min TV-PG comedy Great Dictator, The (1940) A Jewish barber takes the place of a war-hungry dictator. Dir: Charles Chaplin Cast: Charles Chaplin, Paulette Goddard, Jack Oakie. 125 min, TV-PG , CC CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Charles Chaplin. Charles Chaplin, Paulette Goddard, Jack Oakie, Reginald Gardiner, Maurice Moscovich, Billy Gilbert, Henry Daniell. Chaplin's first full talkie; unusual comedy combines slapstick, satire, and social commentary, as he plays dual role of Jewish ghetto barber and dictator Adenoid Hynkel of Tomania. Unique, surprisingly effective film also features Oakie in unforgettable portrayal of "Benzino Napaloni'' of rival country Bacteria. 10:15 PM adventure Reap the Wild Wind (1942) 124 min TV-PG adventure Reap the Wild Wind (1942) Two sailors vie for the affections of a southern temptress while fighting off pirates. Dir: Cecil B. DeMille Cast: Ray Milland, John Wayne, Paulette Goddard. 124 min, TV-PG , CC CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Cecil B. DeMille. Ray Milland, John Wayne, Paulette Goddard, Raymond Massey, Robert Preston, Susan Hayward, Charles Bickford, Hedda Hopper, Louise Beavers, Martha O'Driscoll, Lynne Overman. Brawling DeMille hokum of 19th- century salvagers in Florida, with Goddard as fiery Southern belle, Milland and Wayne fighting for her, Massey as odious villain. Exciting underwater scenes, with the special effects earning an Oscar. Milland good in off-beat characterization. 12:30 AM comedy Ideal Husband, An (1947) C-93 min TV-G comedy Ideal Husband, An (1947) An upstanding politician is haunted by his past when a blackmailer threatens to reveal a youthful indiscretion. Dir: Alexander Korda Cast: Paulette Goddard, Hugh Williams, Michael Wilding. C-93 min, TV-G , CC CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Alexander Korda. Paulette Goddard, Michael Wilding, Diana Wynyard, C. Aubrey Smith, Glynis Johns, Michael Medwin. Oscar Wilde's drawing room comedy receives classy presentation but is slow moving. Remade in 1999. 2:15 AM comedy Women, The (1939) 133 min TV-PG comedy Women, The (1939) A happily married woman lets her catty friends talk her into divorce when her husband strays. Dir: George Cukor Cast: Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell. 133 min, TV-PG , CC CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: George Cukor. Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer, Rosalind Russell, Mary Boland, Joan Fontaine, Paulette Goddard, Lucile Watson, Marjorie Main, Virginia Weidler, Phyllis Povah, Ruth Hussey, Mary Beth Hughes, Virginia Grey, Hedda Hopper, Butterfly McQueen. All-star (and all-female) cast shines in this hilarious adaptation of Clare Boothe play about divorce, cattiness, and competition in circle of "friends.'' Crawford has one of her best roles as bitchy homewrecker. Fashion show sequence is in color; script by Anita Loos and Jane Murfin. Remade as THE OPPOSITE SEX. 4:30 AM comedy Pot O' Gold (1941) 86 min TV-G comedy Pot O' Gold (1941) A young man is caught between his music-hating uncle and a pretty girl from a family of musicians. Dir: George Marshall Cast: James Stewart, Paulette Goddard, Horace Heidt. 86 min, TV-G CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: George Marshall. James Stewart, Paulette Goddard, Horace Heidt, Charles Winninger, Mary Gordon, Jed Prouty. Very minor item about harmonica-playing, music-mad Stewart, and his experiences with a band of struggling musicians. Stewart called this his worst movie! Look briefly for Art Carney as a radio announcer. |
