Have you ever "gone overboard" to see a rare classic film?
By "gone overboard" I mean spent a lot of money or gone out of your way somehow to see something rare?

Here's mine: in 2000 I hopped on a plane from Salt Lake to LA to see a screening of Mabel Normand's "Molly O" at UCLA. It was believed to have been a lost film, but a print was found in Russia and UCLA did some restoration the titles and presented it in their theater. I knew there was very little chance I'd see it on video any time soon, so I went to the screening. As it happened, there was also a screening of Harold Lloyd's first talkie as well, but my friends thought I was nuts to take a 2 day trip "just to see a movie."

What about you?

1. Now that's what I call
a classic film fan! I think the most I've done is track down a copy online and order it. I guess I'm all hat and no cattle! :)

2. I was making relatively good money then
So the only tricky thing was getting time off from work. Couldn't do that now. I've missed a couple of Mabel's rare Goldwyn features that were screened at Cinecon because of the expense. The thing is, these archives are usually very selfish with their films. They won't release them to DVD nor allow TCM to screen them. If you live in or near LA or New York, you're lucky. But screwed if your in any of the flyover states.
