1. The Cavalry Trilogy!

And all in a row! What a joy!

2. Anyone who's never watched the Howard/Shearer "Romeo and Juliet",

do yourselves a favour and take a look.

I avoided it for years, knowing the stars were all way too old for their roles, but finally watched
it one night when I had nothing else to do. Yes, they are too old, and it's also over-produced,
but if you can get past those two drawbacks, it's very rewarding.

Norma Shearer was the big surprise for me; I've always liked her, but I didn't expect her to be so
good with Shakespeare. She might have been cast because of her husband, but she thoroughly deserved
the role on her own merit. The biggest surprise was that, for me, she out-acted Leslie Howard. Had
he been a match for her, this would surely have ranked as one of the great Shakespearean films.

No surprise that John Barrymore performed Mercutio so well, as I think even today he's still ranked
as America's pre-eminent Shakespearean actor, but if you like The Bard, it's a joy to listen to the
lines being delivered with such ease, born of great familiarity. And if you think you don't care
for Shakespeare, try it anyway - you might be pleasantly surprised.
