1. My first thought on seeing this was "wonderful actor" ...

Then looking through the list I realised that the only films of his I
know well from the list are "The Great Escape" and "The Eagle Has
Landed".

I checked him out on IMDb, and was surprised to find that I really know
him mostly from movie cameos or from TV. "The Barchester Chronicles"
is probably one of the best-known series, at least in Australia (also
memorable for the glorious Nigel Hawthorne - and Mr Rickman as Obadiah
Slope, although I confess I didn't know him then). He seemed to do a
great many horror films (it must have been the eyes), but did bob up
regularly on some of the best British series.

I saw him just two weeks ago on Showtime in "The Last Tycoon" - tiny
role, but he was such a scene stealer - even opposite Robert de Niro.

is definitely a classic.
