Little by little
things are happening in my office full of sad & pissed off Democrats. Folks still aren't too sure about the whole "buy blue" campaign, but this Christmas, everyone scaled back some. The office party was a white elephant & amazingly, everyone ended up with something they wanted.

And then yesterday, one of my co-workers brought in BAGS of oranges from her trees. She brought more in today. Suffice to say, those bags now have new homes (I'm the proud owner of one). At least we'll have free, fresh organic oranges until there's none left.

Then the Schwann's guy comes buy & tells us about his neighbor who gives him bags & bags of produce HE grows...."I don't know what to do with all of it" yadda yadda "BRING IT HERE" we yell. ;) Funny how things happen, eh?

1. It's amazing how many Democrats "aren't sure"
about "buying blue". Even some of my most liberal friends really have no interest in learning which companies support which party, let alone "buying blue". I don't know if it's because many on the left have simply give up, or are just too lazy to invest the time and effort to learn what they can,or if they believe that they must continue to consume across the board in order to act as "good citizens" (this I doubt, despite the occasional troll posts saying the same in GD). This forum should be busier than it is, given that economic activism is one of the few tools left to us in our arsenal against the GOP regime, but 'Liberal Activism" has sadly always been a bit of an oxymoron, at least in this country.

2. I think that people are simply lazy.
Ya haveta work on them one store at a time. If I can get everyone I know to swear off Wal-Mart, I'd be happy with that.

3. i find
that when i'm talking to those who "aren't sure" about the buy blue campaign, it's easier for them to start small, with one or two things, and then incorporate more of it when they can or feel comfortable doing so. most of my office now buys gas only at citgo or the shell station in town, for example.

many times, people don't have "blue" alternatives & so just give up thinking "i can't do it all because there's only a walmart in town & it won't make a difference," but if you point out other smaller things they can do, that gets them going. one less $ that goes to a red corporation is a victory in my book.

9. Also,
don't forget about those of us living in VERY rural America. We may want to "buy blue" but, if the stores aren't available, they aren't available. I do buy blue gas though! (and never shop Wal-mart, although they are almost the only store of their kind close to town...)

4. Buy Blue falls short
I do support the Buy Blue campaign, but it is not the first item on a list of priorities when I am deciding if I will support a company or not. My first priority is to be as self-sufficient as possible and end any unnecessary consumption. My second priority is to shop local - buy locally manufactured products, locally grown food, support local retail. I take things like Buy Blue into account after I've satisfied the first two. After all, the Democratic party is not perfect, though preferable to the GOP, and I don't want either party to be controlled by corporate influence and money.

Also, we need to consider that there are millions of people who can't afford to practice economic activism. They are struggling to the degree where the only consideration they make is price and value.

5. I'm one of those millions
I can't afford heating oil this year (with temps in the 30s), I'm living on pasta, and my employer hasn't paid me in six months (long story). I would rather go hungry (and I do; I eat one meal a day now) than buy red, because propping up this regime will kill America and eventually the entire planet, IMHO.

6. "coming to a browser near you in early summer 2005"
This is a developing site that seems to be very ambitious. Can we find any encouragement in efforts like this? The grammar is a bit hard to follow but it says, "People going to Amazon.com, Buy.com, WalMart.com, Yahoo.com and conducted their online shopping generally committed their income (or future income) without regard to the business, political or environmental practices of the entity that sold their product or services. Peacehat will forever change this."

I am a member of MoveOn and TrueMajority. I am encouraging both of these groups to use economic activism to effect change.
