Anyone care to offer advice on computer purchase?
We currently have an ancient Power Mac which has crashed and died. :( It gave a good fight! LOL!

Anyway, we will need to get something soon and wondered what others here like and recommend (cost effective, etc.)?

I recently saw a commercial for an HP workbook that looked pretty cool!

I no longer have access to a computer from home, so it may be a day or two before I get back to people on this--thanks in advance!

:)

2. Custom HP
Made to order desktop with the support of a big company who has outsourced its tech support to New Delhi....

Seriously, I've been very happy with mine.

3. Switching from a Macintosh to Windo$e is Crazy!
Bliss: Switching that way makes absolutely NO sense for many more reasons than I have time to list here. First, Apple's rating from BuyBlue.Org is 99% blue:

http://www.buyblue.org/detail.php?corpId=99

Second, why would you ever want to switch to any Windoze machine when the new Mac Minis cost LESS than most branded WinTel computers, are faster, and Mac OS 10.3 "Panther" is far more powerful?

Moreover, the Mini is about the size of a large clock radio, and integrates well with your existing monitor and many peripherals. The Mac Mini is truly a "Windoze-killer." Apple has so many orders for this new computer that they are airfreighting 747's full of these units direct from Singapore.

HP is a fine company, but you're not exactly starving the Republican beast by buying anything from them. They have nowhere near the ratings on most of the "buy blue" ratings websites that Apple does. When they got rid of CEO Carly Fiorina, they replaced one solidly Republican CEO contributor with another, their current VP of Finance. Furthermore, if what Michael Rupert says about HP is true, their cash-management practices are indeed troubling (see fromthewilderness.com and his book Crossing the Rubicon for more about this).

And last but not least:

To someone like you who says in her bio that her hobbies are "All things artistic and creative, film buff, biking, reading, writing," take it from me -- from someone who makes a pretty decent living being "artistic and creative" -- doing creative work on a PC is like trying to do oil on canvas with a paint brush from Home Depot. It's simply the wrong tool for the job.

Best of luck,

Redacted

5. We hadn't made a firm decision about any system
as of yet...just putting out feelers to see what's out there, what would be good, etc. I appreciate your feedback and all the information you shared. That's just what I was looking for.

Thank you!

6. Thank you everyone! So sorry that I couldn't
respond sooner--I've had to wait to get to the library again. My system is completely down at home.

Thanks to all for the feedback on your systems, etc.

:)
