Anyone here who uses freecycle
Edited on Sat May-14-05 10:21 PM by truth2power
Could you help me understand the mechanics of posting and getting mail on Yahoo and Yahoo Groups. I've joined two Freecycle groups in my immediate area, but I find the whole mail/groups thing pretty much incomprehensible.

I just spent about an hour over there trying to figure it all out, without much success.

1. The freecycle posts from my two groups appear not only in their respective groups but also in my regular Yahoo mail. I sent myself a test message from another email account (not Yahoo) and it appeared in my regular yahoo account mixed in with hundreds of freecycle postings. so if gave my friends my Yahoo email address, I would have to search for their messages among all the freecycle posts. This doesn't seem workable.

2. So, if I wanted to post an offer of something for free, where would I look for the replies? In my regular yahoo account or where? I don't want to offer something and then have people get upset that I don't reply, when i don't even know where to look.

If I respond to an offer, where do i look for their reply to my email? I have been thru every help screen I can find, with no success.

Can someone please explain this? Sorry to be such a :dunce:

edit> I'm going to bed now, but will check back in the am. thanks to anyone who can help.

1. Stopping in again this am.
I know this forum doesn't get as much traffic as LBN or GD. Hoping someone will reply. If I don't get back right away to say thanks it's because I just figure no one has anything to add.

2. There is an option
You can choose to have every offer/post emailed to you or a daily link.
What area are you in? Our freecycle site is a bit confusing too.
Let me go to my site and see if I can give you a better explanation on how to do this.

3. Here is what I found
Go to 'freecycle home page'
On the very top of the page it reads'edit membership'
Scroll down to message delivery and choose 'daily digest' or what ever you want than 'save changes'.
That's how it's set up on our Freecycle.

You could also set up a new yahoo account for just that.I have a special mail account for political emails, without spam filter on, so I don't ever miss anything important.
Hope this helped if not,pm me.

5. I just joined 'Freecycle'
Do you have a Yahoo email account? If not, it would simplify your connection to the Yahoo group if you set up an email with them. It is free and real easy.
I think you would get replies sent to whatever email you set up the freecycle account with.
You can also try contacting the administrator of your Freecycle group.

6. I'm in Sonoma County, CA and here's my experience
I found my local group through the freecycle website. I was already a member of Yahoo and on a couple of other lists, so it was easy to join the Sonoma County Freecycle group on Yahoo.

The rules were that you had to first post an offer, before you could post a wanted. I have my settings so that I get individual e-mails from the list. If I see something I am interested in, I hit reply, and the e-mail goes directly to the individual, not to the whole list.

I've mostly given away items that I no longer wanted, although I did get a free ironing board and a free poster. The list I belong to is very busy, lots of postings, but you have to be right there when an item is posted, to be the first responder. Things go very quickly.

Plus, the group owners broke away from Freecycle recently. Apparently, there have been some changes at the top levels, something to do with either a merger or business dealings with Waste Management, and this caused some consternation. So the owners changed the group name to SonomaCountyReycle, and that also freed them up from the rules they had to follow under Freecycle guidelines.

It's a great group, and they've even had some meet and greet get-togethers. I wish you luck with your local Freecycle or other recycling group.

7. I'm also having problems. Mine are with logging into Yahoo Groups.

Does anyone know what I can do? I go to the groups sign in, type in my name (from previously established email account) and password, hit "enter" but then it takes me back to a sign in screen, asking for my password again. It just won't accept the password. I've tried it with different accounts. I've cleared out all the Yahoo cookies and tried starting all over again. All with no luck.

Can anyone suggest what to do? I'd really appreciate it because the freecycle idea sounds like a great one and I'd like to particpate.

Thanks!
