My cute TELEMARKETER story

I'm sitting at home the other night and the phone rings. I have spoken with most of my family recently so I suspect right away it's going to be a telemarketer. I don't get mad at them really...but I don't get sucked in either.

When I answer the phone, a young woman with an Indian accent starts in saying she's calling from my credit card company and wanting to offer me some great deal that will allow me to have my bill paid if I suddenly can't work and I can get another offer that will keep any future late payments from hitting my credit report (isn't that kind of like "protection money" or something?

So I said..well, what is your name? For a while they used to have "American-sounding" names and attempted to talk in an American accent, etc. Nope. All facades are removed. She says, "I am Aditi Chowla" (name changed to protect the poor lady just trying to make a living). I asked where she was calling from and she admitted India.

I let her go on a bit more...they really train them not to take even a shallow breath or pause as they deliver their bit.

When she hit a stopping point I said, "I really appreciate you calling but actually, I am in the midst of an entire boycott of the US consumer economy to protest what I consider to be a criminal Bush administration. I have joined with a group of like-minded people in America who feel we must cut back on our spending so that we can starve this beast of corporatist government controlled by a few media owners. I'm sure your services are nice, but I am going to say no and tell others to avoid spending in these next few quarters as we try to get our message across."

I also said...I though her English was very good and she would go far in her career if she desired to continue in her progress bridging the Indian and Western culture and keep up the good work.

She said thank you and have a good evening.

This is the second call I've handled that way. It's great because I don't feel rude or upset...and here a complete stranger calls me and I'm able to proselytize about my mission to starve this greedy economy. LOL.

These kinds of stories are fun. I told people on Jen6's original thread about my other call from another Indian person who I shared the same message with. I plan to do that when I'm at malls or other places where people are attempting to "sell me" almost nonstop.

next time they ring. I think that I've cut my spending so much in recent years that they don't bother much anymore, lol!

4. A story about that insurance. I had it on my Chase credit card.

When I got unemployed I applied for the benefits. It took them several weeks to decide if I should get it or not. I didn't pay the bill because I assumed since I was unemployed I would get the insurance I paid for a year. Nope. Since I was past due, they wouldn't cover it. Plus apparently there are tons of other hoops I had to jump through to get the insurance. Just more money for their coffers.
