32. Tom Verlaine
but no Richard Lloyd? Their twin guitar attack made "Marquee Moon" one of the greatest guitar albums of all time.

The odd thing is that I actually enjoy his solo recordings more than those of Verlaine

10. There are many, so I'll boil it down:
1. David Gilmour- really helped to bring Pink Floyd back on course a few years after Barrett left.
2. Syd Barrett- noise pioneer
3. Jimi- again, goes without saying
4. Josh Homme- Kyuss/Queens of the Stone Age- not so much for technical proficiency, but for style. Plugging a guitar through a bass amp is genius. Big, vast-sounding guitarist.
5. Ed O'Brien and Johnny Greenwood-Radiohead- two different styles that mesh well together.

"Mediterranean Sundance" on Friday Night in San Francisco is SICK! It's almost depressing to hear how ridiculously good they are. Some people are simply born to play...

18. 5
Andy Gill - Gang of Four
Jagged, trebly, angular, glorious.

Rowland S. Howard - The Birthday Party
If spaghetti western soundtracks were reverbed-out hate-noise.

Jimmy Page - Zeppelin
Duh.

Mark Shippy - U.S. Maple
Extremely abstract guitar playing. So counterintuitive it's amazing to see that he does in fact play songs the same way every time. An impressive conceptualist.

Malcom Young - AC/DC
I'm always blown away by how effectively he uses silence.

are you all mad?

JP is amazing.

my next four are:

2: Jesper Stromblad - from In Flames, I love him.
3: Johnny Ramone (he's awesome, just cause he didn't play 10 minute solos doesn't mean he's not cool.)
4: Malmsteen.
5. Satriani
6. Vai.

on edit:

FORGOT DICK DALE! He's the real #2, shame on all of you for not mentioning him too!

25. SRV, Gilmore, Harry Leahy, Page, Segovia, Jimi,
Al DiMeola, Roy Buchanan, John Fahey, Michael Schenker (when he was with UFO), Freddie King, Otis Rush, Danny Gatton, Clapton, Keith Richards, and John Fogerty.

Lots of great guitar players in different "genres" with different styles, it's hard to pick favorites.

31. No Jeff Beck?
No Les Paul? No Mark Knopfler? Aside from these three, I think nobody has the control over feedback of Jimi Hendrix and Brian May. Also unsung are Elton John's first guitarist, Davy Johnstone, amazing on any number of axes, Phil Manzera from Roxy Music, Bill Nelson from Bebop Deluxe, and Paul Kossoff from Free.

36. It would be impossible to list my favorites/ who I listen to
but the one's who've had the most influence on my own playing are -

Phil Manzenera - roxy music - Probably the biggest influence. Or at least who I was trying to sound like -

Tony Iommi - Black Sabbath - hey, I know that seems an odd choice - but they were my favorite band between the ages of 14-16, when I first decided to play guitar. Definitely an influence, even though I don't like to admit it.

David Torn - eclectic, wierd, hard to describe. He played in a local band I saw more times than I can remember - changed the way I thought about music more than his style - which I could never even come close to. Went on to work with people like David Sylvian, Bowie, lots of studio and movie soundtrack work. Google him up sometime!

Neil Young - whenever I jammed with people, they would say - "You sound like Neil Young!" Not that I wanted to...

Sonic Youth - they came along later, and once again changed the way I looked at music and how to make it. Real eye openers when it came to what sounds could come out of an electric guitar.

38. I've got a few old LPs
"Primitive Guitars" and

a pretty rare one called "Quiet Sun"

I've heard some of the other stuff, but I always felt his work with Brian Ferry and the solo Eno work brought out the best in him.
