My guys and i kind of think ourselves in the mold of the jazz guys of the 50's and 60's. We take famous tunes and do reworking (subtle to drastic). Sort of interpreting of tunes. Me, i don't sing any of them the way their were originally recorded, because i'm interpreting the vocal part too!
So, it's pretty much the same as singing an original to me, because i'm not imitating any thing i've already heard.
But, that is probably why some people find it easier to sing cover songs. They have the frame of reference of the original version, so they always have some touchstone in the melody or phrasing to which they can always return.
Just a guess.
When we played regularly (about 45 weekends per year for 12 years with the same guys, but we slowed down and then quit after i got the MS), we did about 10 originals and 30 cover tunes. The Professor
