New guitar acquisition....
Edited on Wed Jul-22-09 01:20 PM by SacredCow
My significant other surprised me last night with a gift. Some time back, I told him about my first "good" electric guitar, which was a late-1970s Gibson L6-S Deluxe. I really loved that guitar, but sold it to buy my then girlfriend a birthday present. She appreciated neither the present, nor the sacrifice I made- which should have been a sign, but.... Love is blind (also deaf, dumb, and just all around STOOOOOPID!!!).

Anyhoo- the L6-S Deluxe is relatively hard to find (though not terribly expensive). The Custom is a bit more common, but I preferred the Deluxe (rosewood fretboard in lieu of maple, and strung through the body instead of the stop tailpiece). But he found one, and gave it to me last night- no occaision, other than he found it on eBay and thought I'd like to have it.

It needs a little work, and I'll probably install some Bill Lawrence pickups. Meantime, I'm just thrilled to have another one in the ol' stable.

On edit- This is the model (this is not the acutal one I got):

2. Remains to be seen whether it's going to be just a nostalgia axe...
I play my acoustics more than anything else these days, and I'm really more in the Fender camp.

3. Well, Now We're Brothers!!!!!
I'm a long scale, tight radius guy. So, if you're a Fender guy, we're brothers in arms.

4. this L6-S deluxe is pretty unusual for a Gibson....
It's maple bodied and right at an inch thick, so it's very light. I'm concerned about the set-neck construction- there's just not much surface area for the glue, but it seems tight (as did my first one). It remains the only guitar I've ever owned with a full 2-octave neck.

I've played a number of really nice Les Pauls in my day, but (and maybe I'm a heathen for saying it) I just don't find them to be everything that people say they are. Yeah- they're pretty and well-made and all, but I just don't find the tone all that inspiring. The only possible exception are the P-90 versions.
