How loud do you sing?

I sometimes sing with a microphone to get used to it. This whole building gets to hear my concerts. I wonder if it pisses them off? :)

My wife complains that I have a loud, projecting singing voice, although I tend to be soft-spoken in most other instances.

I was involved in youth choir pretty early on, in elementary school. We had a district-wide chorus made up of a few students from each of the 20+ elementary schools in the school district, and it really helped me figure out how to use my voice, even at a young age.

But then I hit junior high and started hanging with a bad crowd, and took up smoking in high school, so any dreams of a singing career were sidetracked by my burgeoning interest in becoming a heavy metal guitarist and being a druggie wannabee. Oh well.

I can sing softly, too. :) People in the car with me have complained when I use my "projection" too much. Sometimes my microphone complains, too. :D

9. it's fun except ...

it so wears me out these days.

It's a business for young folk. I work with a lot of young folk (i.e. under 30) and twice a week I have different ones wanting me to play with them in this endevor or that endevor but gee ... I just can't stand up to it anymore.

Too many miles. I need my engine overhauled or at least a valve job.

Or something.

10. I hear ya-- speaking from both sides of the coin

I really enjoy playing with my band-- that is, when we can arrange 3-4 schedules, find time to practice, book a gig, get our gear to the gig, deal with everybody's egos and tempers, etc-- not to mention scheduling around our day jobs. I still play occassionally w/ my band, but we're all in our mid-30s now, with spouses/SOs and families, so it gets harder and harder. But it's still a blast to wheel out those tunes we've now known, together, over the last 10 years.

However, playing solo is also quite a buzz. Just me and an acoustic guitar, belting my gutz out, and making that connection with only the most basic tools of the trade. Sometimes it's quite cathartic if you have a good crowd.

But it is kinda odd ... I am 51. I work with many young people (i.e. <25 yrs) and sometimes I ... er ... socialize with them, you know what I mean. :smoke:

Anyway, this one guy I was visiting on ... er ... business ... his roommate had an acoustic on which he was learning guitar. When my frame of mind was right, I borrowed his guitar and fooled with it for a while. There were probably 10 or 12 people in the room, all going about their business but then, they were all listening to me.

Murmer of conversation, then silence and attention. I am a mediocre guitarist and a less than mediocre singer by professional standards but that is the key I think ... most folk are not used to professional playing etc in their living room so that realization shrank my head back down to size (They like me! They really, really like me!) It was still fun.

But I really like to play electric guitar. That's where my best shit is. :headbang: Maybe I should try that with the guys sometime but then you have to sweat vocals being loud enough and dragging shit around.

12. The only time I've silenced a room is at an acoustic gig

It was a pretty small room (coffee bar), but I bet there were at least a 15-20 people in the audience. I was opening for another guy, and his fans were filtering in, starting conversations, getting a little annoying, actually.

I played one last tune that wasn't on my setlist, but one that I knew I could belt out with some real power and emotion. By the end of the three-minute song, the room was silent, except for me.

I got a decent ovation, and even got another $12 or so in tips afterward. It was just one of those weird things that happens every once in a while.

However, I REALLY enjoy plugging in the electric, too. I used to have a stereo amp rig (two amps, two 2×12 cabs) and a couple of very cool digital delays. I'd crank both amps and set the delays up with a fat chorus sound and long-decaying delays. I also had the technique down where I could make my guitar sound like a string section with those delays and amps. Even though it was best experienced live (esp. the stereo), I actually duplicated it on a couple recordings. I'll see if I can find those around, and post links...
