My music (constructive criticism wanted)
I figured this would be a better place for this than the lounge.

Ok so it is not really MY music because they are all covers but hey what the hell. I am looking for some constructive criticism on recording, tone, technique etc. mainly relating to my guitar playing. I am not much of a singer.

All of these are basically me just goofing off playing songs that I enjoy. I'm not really a singer/songwriter type so I don't have a lot of practice at this. I am mainly a guitarist. I'm self-taught (locked myself in my room with Led Zep albums) and have been nominally playing for about 8 years but I've only really been into it for about 6.

Everything on here is me and each track was recorded in less than 30 minutes. Rhythm guitar/vocals and harmonica were all recorded at the same time on a single track and other guitars and keyboard was overdubbed. All overdubs were done in one take. What I played first stayed.

Tracklist:
Fight Test (Flaming Lips cover)

Lets Get It On (Marvin Gaye cover)-I am a 20 year old white dude I will never be mistaken for Marving Gaye thats for sure lol. The solos at the end of this and When You Were Mine are probably the only good parts

When You Were Mine (Prince)-Same goes for Prince lol

Girl Of The North Country(Dylan cover) I HATE the guitar solo I played on this.

And for the equipment geeks

Guitars: Epiphone Casino, Fender American Std Strat, Washburn D-100 Acoustic, Ovation Acoustic

Amps: Marshall JTM 45, Fender Princeton Chorus

Effects: Vox Wah, Digitech X-Series Guitar Synth (used only on Fight Test)

Mixer: El-cheapo Roland 4-track

Recording Program: Cakewalk Pro Audio 9

Hope it does not make your ears bleed

1. I Like your guitar work, but most don't care what gear u used.......
The rythm guitar mix is a bit too up front, but it's not a professional recording. But A for effort. I think there are two types of musicians. The technicians, technically skilled at their instrument, and the creators, those you can write "good" songs." I may get flamed, but I think deep you are one or the other. Rarely both. And I think deep down most of us know in which camp we belong. So my advise is to find your niche and work it, and work it more. Then surround yourself with good people from the other camp. PS you're practicing on material that's too easy. Try covering some Elliot Smith and Jeff Buckley. You'll get way better, faster.

3. I was actually in band that did a buncha Buckley covers
Edited on Sat Jan-08-05 12:49 AM by ZoCrowes
for about two months. The hard part with him is figuring out what fucking chord voicings he is using. Once you have commited the time to do that it makes life a whole lot easier. Hated the lead singer so I quit. And I work in a indie record store in a hipster part of town. I have heard enough about Elliot Smith over the past two months to last me a lifetime lol.

I cut my teeth on Cream, Hendrix, Zeppelin etc so I did not start out with easy stuff. I am actually a songwriter more than anything else. I only do covers when I goof around at home I hate doing more than one or two in a set. However I can't write songs alone. I usually have a hard time writing melodies and words to my music (band stuff is very hendrix-esque so I use a lot of 9th and 7sus2 chords) so I let the singer do that.

Technically I am fucking horrible and I will be the first to admit that. Most of my time is spent writing this is just stuff I do for fun goofing off.

Thanks for the input

On Edit: I disagree about the gear thing. I know a WHOLE bunch of gear geeks. Of course I work at a record store so I am constantly around my fellow music nerds

2. It frustrates the shit out of me!
My old computer ... :grr: I hear maybe 5 seconds and then it buffers for a minute ... 5 more seconds, then it buffers again.

"Why me?"

8. Cool!
I'll keep my eyes open for it. I like this kind of stuff. Very "community" oriented. It's fun.

BTW: We're having some cuts from the TV show they did about us (12 years ago) converted from Umatic Video (the 3/4" Sony machines TV stations used) to MP3. I'll find a place to post some cuts and link them here when the work is done.
