I don't understand people's reluctance to finish their thoughts, to look at the obvious solution. Why do they suffer, wring their hands, stay frustrated and miserable? What do we have to lose?
Start a new party. It is simple, obvious and easy. There is nothing in the way. I know, "it can't work it won't happen you have to work within the system this is the way things are and who are you blah blah." All of that has been thoroughly discredited and exposed for what it is - a way to keep things from changing, cleverly, by saying that they can't change and "here are the reasons that all people who are not crazy agree with." The old "don't get me wrong I agree with you but..." argument. People who say that don't agree with you. They are misleading you.
Then we have the "you are hurting the Dems!" or "helping the Republicans!!" fear mongering campaigns. Not true, and easily overcome. Start a new party with these tactical and strategic goals: that we will keep fighting and building the organization until...
1. The Democratic party is forced to change and truly represent the people, because of the pressure we bring on the party.
2. The new movement is strong enough to replace the Democratic party.
3. There is a collapse and re-organization of the current two parties.
Meanwhile, there is nothing that says we have to "hurt Democrats" or "help Republicans" as we build the party. You vote Dem - just as the religious right continued to vote Republican as they built clout and leverage - and just as the Liberal party in New York or the DFL in Minnesota, you throw your support to the Dems as it is tactically sound to do so without giving up your own momentum, your ultimate goals, or your principles.
Then we have these barriers (all illusions in our minds) - we would need to have a lot of money, we would need MSM exposure, we would need important and famous people helping us, we would need blah blah blah. No we don't need any of that, nor would we want it. The colonists had hand presses, horseback delivery, and a largely illiterate audience. They didn't use any of the excuses we are using. The last thing we want to do is beg for crumbs from the table from the MSM, the big shots, or the money people. Our goal is to overthrow them. Isn't it? If it is, let's get going. If it isn't, let's stop complaining when complaining is all we are ever going to do.
Then we have "but there aren't enough people that support this!" Nonsense. It is our job to get people to support this, and they would - in their millions. Five people on the same page and committed would be sufficient, and it would grow from there. Think about that - getting five people together is a barrier, that is just how screwed up and confused and divided we have become.
Nothing wrong with any of that - it isn't being a "traitor" to the Dems, it isn't helping the Republicans - it is the Republicans worst dream come true, and it is the best thing that could ever happen for Democrats everywhere.
