Hello from Boston. We arrived Boston last night after a great day in Chicago. In case you were wondering, Chicago really lived up to its nickname - the wind was intense. And on top of that the high temperature was a freezing 17 degrees. I am definitely not used to weather like that.
First off, I want to welcome everyone to the new blog. Our online community - each and every one of you - is so important to us. We updated our blog because we wanted it to be as easy as possible for you to speak your mind and to let us know about the issues you care about. Please let us know what you think about the new blog and if there are any improvements you think we can make.
I also want to talk with you about what I've been up to this week - the Hotel Workers Rising tour. I have joined the leaders of UNITE-HERE as well as workers from around the country to make the case that the the huge, multi-national hotel chains have an extraordinary opportunity right now to strengthen our middle class. They can give the hard working men and women who work in their hotels a good wage with good benefits and stop paying most of their workers poverty wages.
Hotel workers who belong to unions have been able to save money, buy a house, pay for their kids' college educations and move into the middle class. Hotels are making record profits but they aren't giving their workers a raise - we need to demand better for our workers.
We have all seen and felt the effects of globalization and there is a lot of uncertainty about the economic impact of globalization. But there is one thing we know right now - service industry jobs are staying in this country, they can't be outsourced. We need to make these jobs the engine to strengthen our middle class and we can do it if the hotel chains are committed to doing the right thing for their workers.
I believe so strongly that this is one of the most important things we can be doing for the people who need our help the most. A good union job is one of the best ways to fight poverty and that's why I'm on this tour to speak out for these workers. So far we've been to San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Boston is our last stop. The response has been incredible. I hope you'll do what you can to help these workers too.
I'm really proud of what we're doing together. I'm signing off now but I want you to keep visiting the blog so we can always be in contact. Take care.
