FORT DODGE, IOWA - State Sen. Daryl Beall was having a come-to-Jesus moment Friday. Yes, he had backed former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean for president in 2004; but that, he remorsefully declared, was "an error of my youth."
Now, Beall said, he had corrected his ways and was supporting "the champion of the underdog" -- former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards.
Edwards, after pretending to stalk off in mock anger, welcomed Beall into the fold. In fact, the 150 people who squeezed into the apple-packing shed in this central Iowa town were there at Edwards' invitation to raise money for Beall.
Edwards, 53, has not declared his candidacy for the White House in 2008. But he has been courting opponents of the Iraq war who supported Dean, labor leaders who once backed former Missouri Rep. Dick Gephardt, and African-American leaders who helped Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry.
