I think you have analyzed this phenomenon accurately. Good work.
As you know from some of my posts, I am trying to understand what is driving people into this cult, and I think many if not most can be brought back. Fear is keeping them in line - that is why the "hope" and the rest of the bullshit doesn't ring true. It isn't hope, it is fear. When I post that, people say "I am not feeling fear. You are wrong." That is right. Some of the people saying that are the fear-mongers themselves - they are driving others with fear tactics. Others have joined the cult for the very purpose of trying to escape their fears, so they no longer feel fear (or are denying that they still do.)
We have something of a tag team going on, with you grabbing their lapels and shaking them, while I validate their emotional states. John, I think we underestimate just how traumatized and terrorized people are. The party leadership made a cynical and cruel move to crush the insurgency. So many people are torn now - they are being asked to give up their idealism and get in line, and they fear that if they don't we will have more of the Bush nightmare. May the Democratic party leadership rot in Hell for doing this to the best people, the most compassionate and caring, the most committed and dedicated.
Please keep in mind that the compassion and sensitivity that led so many people to support Edwards also makes them very vulnerable.
