One Corps - Global Warming Action (Earth Day)

From email:

Dear One Corps Member,

Last Saturday, John Edwards spoke at a "Step It Up" rally in Fort Myers, Florida - one of over 1,400 events nationwide calling on Congress to cut carbon emissions 80% by 2050 (the same bold goal that John laid out in his national energy plan).

It was another moment for us to be proud: John not only talked about fighting global warming, he took action and - following his example - thousands of Edwards supporters showed up at Step It Up rallies across the country to take action as well. (You can see some great photos here).

Now it's time to take the next step. This Sunday (Earth Day), we're gathering in communities around the country to hold "Reduce your Carbon" outreach events. We'll show people how to calculate their own "carbon footprint" and how much carbon we can each save just by making a few simple changes in our everyday lives.

Then we'll ask people if they're willing to sign a pledge to reduce their carbon. Our goal is to collect enough pledges at local events this weekend to save at least one million pounds of carbon in the coming year - but we can't do it without you. Why does the John Edwards campaign ask us to take immediate action on real issues, instead of just raising money or selling a candidate like a traditional campaign?

Because this campaign is about something much bigger than just winning the next election. Check out this excerpt from what John said at Saturday's Step It Up Rally in Fort Myers, Florida - it's a perfect example of what this all means:

What I want to say to all of you on a really serious note is: Elizabeth and I have decided what we're going to do. I would ask you to each ask yourself this question: what are you going to do?

Someone in the crowd yells out: "Vote for you!"

Thank you for voting for me, I'm glad, and I want your vote. BUT, it's going to require more than that. The country needs you, the country needs you desperately.

To bring about the kind of change that we're talking about, to combat climate change - global warming - to change the way we use energy, to end poverty in America, to change what's happening in the world and in this war in Iraq, to have universal health care - all these things require you to create and build the kind of America that all of us believe in, that all of us can be proud of, that all of us can look up to and the rest of the world will look up to and respect...it's going to require you.

If you don't remember anything else I said, if you leave here today if you're asking yourself the question, 'what am I going to do?' then I will feel like my visit to Fort Myers was worthwhile.

Ultimately, we're part of this campaign because we're ready to answer this call to service. We know that every day we have a choice: Will we contribute to the problem, or will we contribute to the solution? This weekend, let's gather as John Edwards supporters and make our choice clear.
