John Edwards One Corps Members,
Throughout this campaign and his career, John Edwards has made eradicating poverty a top priority. After announcing his candidacy in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans several months ago, John has used every opportunity to draw attention to the injustices faced by 37 million Americans who wake up in poverty every morning. Last Friday, he returned to New Orleans to talk about his plans for ending poverty in America, and to roll up his sleeves to help those in need today.
This month, John's asking all of us to do the same as part of our National Poverty Action Day on Saturday, May 19. We've put together a simple, powerful plan to combat the worst effects of poverty in our communities today while building the support we need to end poverty in America tomorrow, and we need you to take the lead.
On, Saturday, May 19th, John Edwards One Corps members will be gathering outside of supermarkets nationwide to collect food goods for a local food bank, pass out information about the Edwards plan to end poverty, and sign up people who want to join the cause.
To pull this off, we're counting on you to step forward and organize an event in your area. Hosting an event is easy, but we can't move forward without you. You can sign up and find all the materials you need at:
http://blog.johnedwards.com/oc/povertyOrganizing a National Poverty Action Day event is as easy as these four simple steps:
Pick a location (preferably in front of a grocery store so you can ask people to donate food items) and check with the owner to make sure it's okay for you to set up a table there
Post your event on our website so others in your area can join you
Find your local America's Second Harvest food bank or other food drop-off center so you know where you're going to take the goods you collect on the 19th (we can help with this!)
Print out fliers and sign up sheets to bring with you for your Day of Action table
While speaking to the National Press Club last year, John stated: "Poverty is the great moral issue of our time, and we all have an obligation to do something about it." And true to form, John Edwards is doing something about it. He's offered a bold and detailed plan to end poverty completely within 30 years, he's released a book called "Ending Poverty In America" that brings together a collection of innovative ideas about how to fight poverty, and numerous times he's rolled up his sleeves and taken action to help stop poverty today. Are you ready to join him?
Please stand with us on May 19th to fight poverty in our local communities:
http://blog.johnedwards.com/oc/povertyThis campaign is about taking action today to fight for the change that can't wait until we elect a new president. If each of us takes small steps in our own communities, we can make a huge impact. Together - as One Corps - we can begin to eradicate poverty and help build the one America we all believe in.
Thanks for taking action,
-George Stern
