That diarist gives you all alot to think about, doesn't she? On one hand, I'm discouraged that she doesn't seem to have any concrete solutions to getting past the racism in this country beyond the usual lines of communication and actually listening.
On the other hand, how the hell DO you "get past" something that is as much a part of American culture as the Stars and Stripes? How do you get past the 400 year old gorilla that so many would rather pretend not to see? I thought this bit was especially profound:
"None of us will deny that there is a large sub-section of the populace who vociferously refuses to accept the right of a duly-elected black man to live in the White House with a black wife and children. Many of those deniers sit in Congress."
Scary. And true.
